Excerpts from the article:

Toronto police are appealing to witnesses to come forward with any videos or photos as the investigation continues into a shooting during Monday’s Raptors celebrations that injured four people.

Three suspects were arrested and two firearms were recovered soon after shots rang out at approximately 3:30 p.m., just after the Toronto Raptors team arrived at Nathan Phillips Square for a rally in honour of their NBA championship win.

The shooting occurred at the back of the square near Queen Street West and Bay Street and caused crowds of fans to flee in panic.

The delicate relationship between Houston Rockets stars James Harden and Chris Paul has been termed “unsalvageable” and the star players want a divorce, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Paul went to Rockets management and demanded a trade, and Harden issued a “him or me” edict following the Rockets’ second-round loss to the Golden State Warriors, sources said.

The backcourt mates went nearly two months without speaking to each other during the season, sources said, creating a tenuous environment for teammates and everyone involved with the franchise.

Harden hasn’t returned Paul’s repeated attempts at communicating this offseason, sources said, after a year in which the pair repeatedly got under each other’s skin with petty acts in practices and games.

Paul has been known to clash with teammates during his career, most notably with the Los Angeles Clippers before being traded to Houston in the summer of 2017. Up until this season, his production ranked among the best at his position in NBA history, but he’s had to curtail his style while acclimating to Harden’s pace.

“There’s no respect at all, on either side,” a source told Yahoo Sports. “They need to get away from one another. Chris doesn’t respect James’ standing in the league, and James doesn’t respect the work Chris has put in to this point.”

*****

I don't know who exactly Paul thinks Houston can trade him to; he may be the most untradeable player in the league, even beating out DC's John Wall. Paul signed a four-year deal with the Rockets last season worth $159.7 million that has the team on the hook for a whopping $38.5 million for next season, $41.3 million the season afterwards, and finally $44.2 million in 2021/2022 at the age of 36.

And let's say they do manage to trade Paul -- what are they going to get in return? Certainly not a championship level PG who can help them compete against the Lakers next season.

Excerpts from the article:

Toronto Blue Jays legend Joe Carter had some advice for recent NBA champion Kawhi Leonard: L.A. won’t love you like Toronto will.

Carter, who was part of both the baseball club’s 1992 and 1993 World Series wins, said winning the first time meant “having your name enthralled in history for the rest of your entire life and thereafter.”

Despite nearly three decades passing since he hit the pivotal home run in the 1993 win, Carter told CTV’s Your Morning, “your name can still be prominent in Canada.”

Huh, interesting, the reported drama between James Harden and Chris Paul. It makes me wonder if James actually burned down Chris' kitchen when he tried to microwave a Chinese food carton with the metal carry handle. Ya know, like in the State Farm commercial.

One of the more surprising developments of the week was the news that Al Horford will not be re-upping with the Boston Celtics. We've known for a while now Kyrie was gone, but the Celtics losing Horford too was unexpected. Between losing those two and the unlikelihood of them landing any of the top free agents this summer, the Celtics don't look like they're going to become the great Eastern Conference super team that many people thought. I mean, for whatever reason, Boston has never been an NBA free agent destination and after years of being praised for their stockpile of valuable future draft picks, they really don't have much of those anymore, either.

Well so far no huge suprises that I can see: Zion to NO, Ja Morant to Memphis, R.J. Barrett to the Knicks....

he Minnesota Timberwolves have acquired the sixth pick in Thursday's NBA draft from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for the 11th pick and forward Dario Saric, a league source told ESPN.

Suns deal Warren, No. 32 pick to Pacers

Excerpts from the article:

6 Canadians selected by NBA clubs, including 4 in 1st round!

A native of Mississauga, Ont., and a star with Duke, the six-foot-seven Barrett was the highest-ranked Canadian selected on Thursday night. He was also the first of four Canadians chosen in the first round, establishing a new record for Canada.

Two more Canadians were selected in the second round, surpassing the record for most players picked from any country outside the United States in a single draft. The previous record of five was set by France in 2016.

"Today is a momentous day for all our Canadian players drafted into the NBA," said Rowan Barrett, general manager of Canada's senior men's basketball team and RJ Barrett's father.

"With a record number of Canadians selected in the 2019 NBA draft, this exemplifies our players reaching for the highest levels in the sport.

"This growth has not happened overnight and is result of many years of planning, programming and winning."

Virginia Tech guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker of Toronto was selected 17th overall by the Brooklyn Nets, the second Canadian picked in the draft. Vancouver-born and Arizona-raised Brandon Clarke of Gonzaga was taken four picks later, going to the Oklahoma City Thunder at 21st overall.

Mfiondu Kabengele of Burlington, Ont., who played for Florida State last season, was drafted by the Nets 27th overall. However, ESPN reported that Brooklyn had a deal in place with the Clippers that will send Kabengele to Los Angeles.

Michigan forward Ignas Brazdeikis of Oakville, Ont., was drafted in the second round, 47th overall, by the Sacramento Kings — at the time matching the worldwide record as the fifth Canadian selected. Several media reports indicate that the Kings have a deal in place to send Brazdeikis to the Knicks, where he will join Barrett.

The new record of six was set when Iowa State guard Marial Shayok of Ottawa was taken 54th by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The younger Barrett was the highest Canadian picked since Andrew Wiggins went first overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014.

Anthony Bennett of Brampton, Ont., also went first overall to the Cavaliers in 2013.

Excerpts from the article:

With the 59th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Toronto Raptors selected University of Miami centre Dewan Hernandez.

Here’s a little more on the relatively unknown big-man prospect Raptors general manager Bobby Webster and his team chose with their lone pick on the evening.

Age: 22
Position: Centre
Height: Six-foot-11 | Weight: 235 lbs
School: University of Miami
2017-18 stats: PPG: 11.4 | RPG: 6.7 | BPG: 1.0 | FG%: 57.6

Looks like Dewan is happy to be a Raptor as he tweeted #WeTheNorth last night!

As it stands now, the Pelicans have not relented. And why would they when doing so would hinder their own ability to build a competitive roster over the next month?
You see, the Lakers could have created $32.5 million in cap space — enough to sign a player with seven-to-nine years of NBA service to a max deal (i.e., Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, etc.) — if they negotiated July 30 as the trade completion date. That way, they could draft the No. 4 pick for New Orleans, sign him to a first-year salary of $8.2 million, wait the requisite 30 days to trade him, and then use his contract to match salaries in an even swap for Davis.

Waiting until July 30 complicates matters for the Pelicans, who would have less cap space of their own with which to pursue free agents. It also impacts their ability to add the No. 4 pick to their summer league roster or shop the pick to a third team.

Instead, the deal is scheduled to be completed when the moratorium is lifted on July 6, reportedly at the Lakers’ behest. In that scenario, they will absorb Davis’ contract into cap space and be left with $23.7 million to pursue free agents — less than the maximum salary for players of any experience (i.e., D’Angelo Russell).

What’s worse: The Lakers could have still created $27.8 million in cap space — enough to pursue a max-level player with up to six years of experience — if they insisted Davis decline a trade kicker that will increase his salary by $4.1 million. Except, according to Bleacher Report’s Howard Beck, they never bothered to ask.

in the first round of Thursday night’s NBA draft to select first-team All-American Grant Williams from Tennessee. Williams is a skilled, undersized forward and the son of a NASA safety engineer. I mention his parentage because being privy to mom’s insider knowledge of space and physics and, uhh, third-grade astronomy has convinced young Grant Williams that the earth is, in fact, spherical.

As a commenter says: "If Kyrie’s still undecided on whether to stay or leave, this insolent rookie may have just pushed him over the edge."

LOL, Jimmy would actually go well with those two in State Farm commercials. He actually drives a minivan, so that would be comedic gold!

Yeah, I read that report about the Rockets wanting the Sixers to do a sign-and-trade for him. I don't know why in the world the Sixers would want to do it. One thing's for certain, the Sixers must re-sign at least one of the two, Jimmy Butler and/or Tobias Harris. They gave away too many assets - players and draft picks - to allow them both to leave for nothing this offseason.

They would be able to get assets and/or a trade exception to use on an available player they fancy later in the season without worrying about salary matching. If they sign Harris without Butler, they do not get the same latitude to improve given they cannot just simply replace Butler's salary slot through free agency.

On Thursday, Washington acquired three players (Moritz Wagner, Jemerrio Jones and Isaac Bonga) in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. By doing so, the Wizards lodged themselves into the Anthony Davis saga as the third team in the monumental trade between the New Orleans Pelicans and Lakers.

The Pelicans agreed this month to trade Davis, a six-time all-star, to the Lakers, but the timing of the deal’s completion would impact Los Angeles’s salary cap. With the Wizards entering the fray to send $1.1 million to the Pelicans in return for three young players from the Lakers, coupled with Davis waiving his $4 million salary kicker, Los Angeles can complete the deal July 6 and have enough money to sign a maximum contract free agent.

While the rest of the league awaits Sunday’s kickoff to free agency — all eyes are on the Lakers, who now can go after NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard or all-star point guards Kemba Walker or Kyrie Irving — Washington continues to subtly rebuild its roster through creative moves by surrendering no assets on the roster and spending efficiently.

KD will never win a championship in Brooklyn. Him and Kyrie Irving might kill each other before their time ends in Brooklyn. They are the two most unhappy guys in the NBA. Now Judas is in the Northeast...wonderful.

Man, even if Kawhi stays with the Raptors (unlikely), I gotta say that - at the moment - I really like the Sixers' chances to win the East next year.

Beyond that, Brooklyn will be the team to beat in the East once Durant is playing again. Speaking of which...congratulations, Dread, your team is finally on the map, so to speak. Meanwhile, it's back to square one for the Knicks.

You are being harsh on my team lol. I love KD and Kyrie to the Nets. I feel more excited about the Nets offseason this year than the Rams offseason last year. Thats mainly because the Nets get to stick it to the Knicks who feel like they are entitled and they dont have to do things the right way. They tried to tank to get my guy Zion and struck out. They traded away a young talented superstar Porzingis on his rookie deal because they wanted to get KD and Kyrie and struck out. Heck they couldnt even get AD and they had the better draft pick than the Lakers lol. Meanwhile the Nets quietly was doing what they can with GM Marks and HC Atkinson to pull the Nets out of the hole that GM Billy King dug them in. They played hard, didnt try to tank even though they technically couldve this season since they owned their own 1st round pick. They didnt. They developed cast off players like Harris, Dinwiddie, and D'Lo. They took chances on guys like Allen and LeVert later in the draft that they owned from other teams through trades and so far its working. Like they did the right way and the reason why I disagree that KD and Kyrie wont work is because not only did they both choose to come to Brooklyn but they took less money so that the team can sign other players mainly DeAndre Jordan. So I trust the Nets organization and while its not a lock that they win a championship, I feel strongly that they will and its not just because the team is going to be amazing but the Knicks bad karma (black cat running around the franchise) is going to help the Nets win a championship maybe multiple titles so Knicks fans and the organization can watch the parade for the Nets in Brooklyn 20 minutes away lol. Brooklyn stand up. Go Nets!!!

I hate both guys especially KD. He is a sell out, an asshole, brash, etc. He is Judas. Kyrie is the most unhappy guy in sports. He is overrated as hell. I see this being a train wreck long term especially with the injury history of both guys.

Jimmy Butler is all about himself and wants to be the man. He was the third option in Philly so now he can put up hollow numbers for a team that won't sniff the playoffs.

Im the opposite as Ive always loved KD and Kyrie. I loved Kyrie since he decided to go to my college basketball team Duke. I love KD because all the love affair for LeBron since he got into the league I felt like KD wasnt getting the love he deserved until recently with the Warriors. I get that KD joined the Warriors and I didnt like it one bit. How do you leave a team you just had down (3-1) in the WCF and blew it to join that team and they won 73 games and already had a title without you? So yeah I was so upset that KD did that but at the end of the day it was his choice and I cant fault him for it. Like Kyrie and KD chose to go to Brooklyn so if its a train wreck its only going to be because of injury and I trust the Nets medical staff because they have the best medical staff in the NBA. KD personal doctor who knows all about his injury history is on the Nets medical staff. If I can equate that to the NFL, remember when the Rams traded for Sammy Watkins and people was like they gave up a 2nd round pick for a guy who hasnt shown he can stay healthy? How many games did Sammy play that season for the Rams? He played every single game. Why was that? The Rams have one of if not the best medical staffs in the NFL. Thats not my opinion its facts. The Rams over the course of recent history hasnt had many major issues to deal with and thats not by accident. They have a great medical team, strength/conditioning coach, and their organization as a whole knows how to manage the players. The second Sammy left the Rams and stepped foot in KC he misses games because he is hurt. So I have confidence in the Nets medical team and organization to take care of Kyrie and KD in the same way Toronto took care of Kawhi to keep him healthy and ready to go in the playoffs. When KD comes back its not going to be about the regular season but rather the playoffs. A healthy KD and Kyrie who are both going to be motivated because there are people who are saying its not going to work is going to show everyone that it will work. Again whether or not they win a title Idk but they will put the Nets in great position to win one when both are on the court but its going to be far from a train wreck. Ill just add to that the reason Kyrie wont be unhappy is because his heart has always been in Brooklyn with his family. He is home with his dad and relatives and friends and get to play with his on the court friends like KD and Jordan. Thats his happiness so I dont think anyone can take his unhappiness in Cleveland and Boston and look at this situation where he actually wants to be as he is still going to be unhappy. He truly wants to be in Brooklyn because he is home around his family and friends and that makes him happy.

fyi, KD's doctors that treated his Achilles is a part of the Nets medical staff, who is possibly the best medical staff in the league. I know he probably won't be the same player after his achilles, but i'm hoping his recovery is like Dominique Wilkins, who was more that serviceable after his achilles injury, just not the Human Highlight Film that he was after the injury, and KD's game doesn't rely on uber athleticism. Plus, modern medicine is amazing.

That being said, i'm GODDAMN ECSTATIC the Nets signed KD/Kyrie/DJ and kept most of the roster intact. I mean DJ is a total upgrade from Ed Davis at the 5 as well. Hell he can teach Allen to be an All NBA defender and he can guard the centers that Jarrett can't.

^^ We gotta agree to disagree on this cuz I say bullshit about the family stuff. Sorry that doesn't matter. He might be happy for a year and then he won't be. He was (and is) a jerk in Boston. He didn't sign a basketball for charity. Aside from that I think the Celtics are better off without him. He is the type of player you can not win with. As for Judas I lost all respect for that loser when he left OKC. I dispise him.

Just a quick minor rant:

I think one of the things driving all this mania and team-switching is the same source of all our ills today: The internet.

One of the most common lists we always see is "Best NBA Players To Never Win a Championship" (I just tried the google machine and got 20M hits. I know they aren't all legit but if it's even a quarter, you get the point.)

NOBODY wants to be on that list. When you've got the stats you just KNOW you "deserve" to be in a position to win it all. Kevin Garnett definitely felt that way spurring his escape to Boston; he was never going anywhere in Minnesota. KD was never going to get anywhere in OKC; you just DON'T WANNA BE ON THAT LIST. Dudes is like, if Darko Milicic, Mike Miller and Juwan Howard have rings then FUUUUUCK MAN!!

So sadly I think we're at the point of No Return. The days when guys would spend their whole careers (or most of it anyway) in one place and being automatically identified with that franchise, are over.
