Funny how you mention OT in this post.
That game kind of spoiled my Christmas dinner...going into it, I was expecting a loss, but at points there in the 4th quarter and OT, I actually started to believe the Sixers were going to win the game. As usual, when the Sixers lose a game against one of these top teams, turnovers are a big reason why-Embiid (6), Simmons (4) and Butler (4) were the main contributors to the Sixers' grand total of 19 turnovers in the game; Celtics only had 9. Along with that problem, Kyrie Irving was just ridiculous.

I can't say I watched any of the other games...not sure why the league insisted on putting the Knicks on Christmas Day again. However, watching some highlights now, I see that Lebron James suffered a groin strain in the Lakers' blowout win over the Warriors. Lebron is being listed as "day-to-day" right now. By the way, call me crazy, but I'm kind of feeling like the Lakers are the only West team that could give the Warriors a tough time in the playoffs. I mean, I see the standings as they are right now, but I'm not feeling teams like Denver and OKC as legit contenders in the West. It'll be interesting to see if the Lakers pull of any big moves in-season, or if they insist on waiting until next summer to make those big moves.

Things just got much worse for Smiler's Washington Wizards:
I wonder if this will push them to go into fire sale mode in the coming weeks.

I'm actually not gonna cry about this just yet...I remember last season and the team actually did better without him (well, at least for awhile).
We could -- and the key word here is COULD -- get a somewhat pleasant surprise out of this. Of course, I'd feel more optimistic if we hadn't just lost Oubre, but there we are.

So the Nets are 9 - 3 over the last twelve without Caris. I really didn't think the Nets would be getting this good this fast. I can see the 7th or 8th seed be within reach, and possibly higher if Caris comes back this year at full strength. I don't really expect him to be 100 till near the end of the season if he does return next month. Kinda sucks because the lottery class this year is insane and we have our pick. Oh well. The playoffs may just make the Nets a more interesting location if a top player wants the NY market. I just hope Marks is patient until the ideal player hits the market, but he hasn't really missed yet besides Crabbe IMO. I swear if he takes Kurucs minutes i'm going to flip.
Hell, Musa is killing the D-league as well, and he was the higher of the 2 picks.

Oh, and Jarrett Allen says fuck your favorite superstar's dunk.

All of those teams in that 6-10 bubble in the East (Hornets, Heat, Pistons, Magic, Nets) seem to be really streaky. Just when it looks like one of 'em is getting hot, they go cold. Needless to say, all of these teams are currently below .500.
As for my Sixers...even though they came into Portland tonight having had a couple days rest, while the Trail Blazers had to play the Warriors last night, they got completely dominated from the jump and lost by 34; I think the Blazers were actually up by 40+ points early in the second half. What happened, you ask? Joel Embiid sat out the game with what is being described as "knee soreness." Just another reminder of how freakin' valuable he is, not to mention how not-so-great the rest of the team is, Jimmy Butler included.

Happy New Years everyone!
As we move towards the halfway mark, things appear to have plateaued around the league - with one big exception:
In the East it's Giannis, Kawhi and everyone else lines up behind them.
In the West we seem to have entered a period of rotating dominance among Denver, GSW, the Clippers and OKC...but wait! Houston is now tied with the Clippers at three games out of first. They have now won their last five and are 12-4 since Nov 28th. Harden has entered his own personal Beast Mode as he has done before, but the question is how long can he keep it up until CP3 returns?
Weird footnote about the East: Toronto has the most wins against WC teams with 10, and then next it's...Miami? Yup, they've got 9 wins, and Milwaukee follows them with 8. Miami has now forced their way into the #7 position in the East. Charlotte is just above them at #6 with a .500 record. However, they've got just one win against a WC team...and they start a six-game WC swing on Jan 5th.....and without Cody Zeller who fractured his right hand on Monday.

Memphis has acquired Chicago guard Justin Holiday for forward Wayne Selden, guard MarShon Brooks, and 2019 and 2020 second-round picks, league sources told ESPN.

if th playoffs started today...THE NETS ARE THE 8TH SEED!!!!
I'm conflicted because i want one of those top 5 guys in Brooklyn, however making the playoffs means that top players might just consider Brooklyn over the Knicks if they want to win and play in the NY market.

Tom Thibodeaux has been Future Endeavored.
Actually, know what? I don't even think they wished him best of luck, they apparently just came in after the the game were all like, pack your shit and GO.

I wonder what team will hire him next offseason.
Boy, it was only like 2-3 years when the Timberwolves were viewed as like the most promising up-and-coming team in the league. I remember how disappointed I was when the Sixers did not win the Draft Lottery in which Andrew Wiggins was the consensus #1 overall pick; I really thought they were missing out on a superstar. While he's put up some decent numbers in his early career, it's become clear that Wiggins is not some franchise-altering superstar. As for Karl Anthony-Towns, he too has good stats, but his playoff debut last year was awful and he's proving to be a defensive liability.
I don't know if anyone's noticed, but it turns out the Lakers aren't that good without Lebron James. They're now 1-5 since "The King" went down on Christmas Day.
Oh, by the way, nice wins for matchmaker's Raptors on back-to-back nights: They won at Milwaukee on Saturday and then came home to Toronto on Sunday and beat the Pacers (without Kawhi Leonard).

Adrian Wojnarowski

The Houston Rockets traded guard Michael Carter-Williams and cash to the Chicago Bulls in a salary-cap maneuver, league sources told ESPN.
The Bulls will waive Carter-Williams, whose contract would've become guaranteed for the season on Monday afternoon, league sources said.
Chicago also will send Houston a heavily protected future second-round pick that is unlikely to ever convey, sources said.
The deal saves the Rockets $2.6M in luxury-tax payments, dropping the team's bill from $16.3 million to $13.7 million.
The Bulls will also waive guard MarShon Brooks, who was acquired in a deal with Memphis last week.

^Well that 1222nd win came in SPECTACULAR fashion!
From ESPN:
* OKC at San Antonion went into Double OT, Spurs win 154-147,
*That's 301 points combined; the last time a reg season game did 300+ was Dec. 7, 2006, when the Suns beat the Nets 161-157 in double overtime.
*LaMarcus Aldridge with a Career High 56 points, blowing past his previous high of 45. He beat Tony Parker for 3rd most points scored by a Spurs player, (Parker scored 55 points against Minnesota in 2008.)
*It's almost easy to take Russell Westbrooks' 3Ds for granted nowadays; But tonight, he finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 24 assists, the first player in NBA history to post those numbers in the same game, according to Elias Sports Bureau research. The only other player to have a 24-point, 24-assist, 10-rebound game was Isiah Thomas, who did it for the Detroit Pistons in a double-overtime game in 1985.

HALF SEASON CHECK:
EC: As I wrote last week, we have a plateau: Bucks, Raptors, Pacers, 76ers and Celtics. They are, right now, the only teams above .500. Miami, Brooklyn, Charlotte and Detroit look to keep fighting for those last three spots. However, it has to be noted that Philly and Boston have underwater road stats. Miami, along with being decent when facing the West, is .556 on the road.
Cleveland is still in single digit wins, the last team in the League with that distinction. Guys I'm trying to think of some catchy phrase for tanking efforts to guarantee a Zion Williamson pick, and got nothin, help me out. "Lyin for Zion?" no...
Orlando is actually a fairly good defensive team, currently ranked 14th. They're getting killed in offense though, where they rank 26th. Kevin Knox is doing some good things in New York; he'll be great on somebody elses' team someday....
WC: Despite the loss of Lebron, the Lakers have managed to hang on, while Sacramento has slipped. Memphis turned out to be a mirage (again). After starting 15-9, they've since gone 4-13. Utah has actually turned things around a bit; they are 10-8 since Dec 2nd, when they were 11-13.
There's only three WC teams with winning road records thus far, and not-so-coincidentally, they're the three tops right now; Denver, GSW and OKC. Despite their recent win streak, San Antonio is the worst among .500+ teams with a .350 road record.
Anthony Davis is in the Top Five in Blocks (#2), Points scored (#2) and 4th in boards, but the Pels are still sweeping the basement.
Overall:
Currently, no one in the entire league has a win streak of more than 3 games.

Leaders right now:
PPG: James Harden (33.9)
RPG: Andre Drummond (14.9)
APG: Westbrook, (10.7)
SPG: Westbrook (2.52)
BPG: Myles Turner (2.78)
FG: Rudy Gobert (.654)
FT%: Malcolm Brogdon (.987)
3PT%: Seth Curry (POR) (.490)
Changes from 20 games ago: Kyle Lowry dropped to second in Assists; Hassan Whiteside drops to 3rd in blocks;
Russ dropped his boy Paul George to second in Steals; Bojan Bogdanovic has dropped all the way to 9th in 3pointers.

Sixers lose - in Philly - to the Hawks tonight, 123-121. Fuck me, these guys can't beat any team without Embiid; he was out with a sore ankle after twisting it in the Wednesday night loss at Washington. Jimmy Butler put up 30 points, but with 2 seconds left in the game, he was fouled and went to the line with a chance to tie the game. Mind you, he was 12-for-12 from the line at the moment he stepped to the line with this chance to tie. But, of course, he misses the first! He then intentionally missed the second and Wilson Chandler (of the Sixers) actually got the rebound and had a point-blank layup, but he put too much on it and it bounced off the rim after going off the board. Really, what killed 'em tonight was the awful team defense; without Embiid, Atlanta's bigs got whatever they wanted down low (and offensive rebounds). On the other hand, Embiid's absence does not explain the Sixers' terrible perimeter defense throughout the game. It's worth noting that the Hawks came in with what was the 29th ranked offense in the league. I'm pretty sure I've said it in this thread before but I'll say it again: Without Joel Embiid, I'm not even sure the Sixers would be a playoff team.
Things could get rough for them in the next 2+ weeks because they've got a lot of Western Conference teams coming up. They will end the month with the toughest road trip of the season: , , ,

Shit Cot Tam, 3 teams with 140+ points last night. I gotta check if that's some kind of record.
Sixers just dominated Minny (149-107) from front to end in the boards (54-34)and everywhere else.
Golden State goes to Denver and makes a statement, beating them 142-111 and takes their #1 spot in the West.
If it wasn't for Phoenix beating Denver last week, I'd be tempted to call this the Upset of the Month. But Atlanta's 142-126 home victory over OKC will have to settle for Upset of the Week. Alex Len had 24 points and John Collins (I know right? "Who??") had 26.

I was surprised that Timberwolves-Sixers game was such a blowout. The night before the game, I was on the verge of buying a ticket for it on StubHub; glad I didn't. Even though the home team wins like that, it kind of sucks because the star players end up being on the floor for less time than the average game. I always feel like I don't get my money's worth when that happens. I've been itching to go to a Sixers game, I only went to one this season and it was before they made the Jimmy Butler trade. They've got three home games in the next week before they go on that west coast road trip. OKC comes to town for a rare Saturday afternoon game (which will be on ABC at 3:30 EST), but tickets for that one are too expensive for my taste. So, I'm looking at going to either the game against Houston on MLK Day or the one against San Antonio on Wednesday; it'll most likely be that SAS game.
Golden State blowing out Denver - in Denver - was also a surprise last night (the Warriors scored an NBA record 51 points in the 1st quarter). Then again, I guess it goes to show you how good the Warriors can still be when they're "all in" for a game, not to mention that maybe the Nuggets - despite their record - are not actually a legit contender.

Shit Cot Tam NBA Night Part II: A pair of 280+ point games;
Brooklyn goes to Houston, beats Harden & Co. 145-142, and reach .500 in the process, and #6 in the East. Spencer Dinwiddie off the bench with 33 pts, 10 assists and 2 rebounds, including some clutch 3's in the fourth when Bkn was down 128-122. Another big game for harden as he has 58, 10 and 6.
By all rights, GSW should have been on cruise control following last nights' big game at Denver, but nope, they're at home taking on the Pelicans and win a close one 147-140. OK, now they're scary again.

Look out for Dread's Brooklyn Nets! They won again tonight and now have a winning record (24-23). The highlight of their week was their win in Houston, Harden went off for 58 points but the Nets won it in OT.
Also happening tonight, DeMarcus Cousins makes his debut for the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, Lebron is still out for the Lakers (12 games and counting) and everyone is just guessing as to when he'll return.

Week in Review:
Brooklyn IS doing great. The only sticking point is that they lose games by a sizable margin: in their last four losses the margin ranges from 13 - 21 points. The last three wins they've got by double-digits (since Dec 7th) are against Atlanta (twice) and Chicago.
Washington is in a holding pattern: They're 6-4 since John Wall went out for the season. They find ways to win, but it remains to be seen if they can do anything more.
Milwaukee is the only team in the league with a 10+ point differential. GSW is next at 6.5+
The Clippers are collapsing; They're on a five-game losing streak, and they're 8-12 in their last 20. They're out of contention right now and Lou Williams is now out with a hammy.
Utah OTOH has improved; thanks in part to drilling LAC the other night, 129-109, they're 12-4 in their last 16 and sitting at #7.
Warning signals for OKC; since Dec 23rd, they are 5-8; in that frame they've lost to a no-LBJ Lakers and Washington once and Minnesota twice. They've also played Dallas twice in that frame and won one, lost one. They've got a shitload of tough games (and, correspondingly ABC &ESPN appearances) coming up too: Philly this afternoon, and Milwaukee, Boston, Utah and Portland.
Nothing hugely spectacular from GSW last night in their 112-94 rout of LAC; Cousins returned, made some noise and got fouled out, so...business as usual!

Damn it, that's now 19 straight losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Philadelphia 76ers!
In fact, the only time the Sixers ever beat the Thunder (formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics/Sonics) was the very first time they played them as the Thunder, way back in 2008. WTF?!

Listen, LeVert (who arguably is our best player) comes back in about a week or so and we're the sixth seed ATM. He comes back and there's a chance we might be 5th. The team has turned a corner IMO and i think we're one of the better teams in the east. Obviously we're not in the top tier, but there's a chance fully healthy we could fight for the 5th seed (We got Boston and Philly in our division, we're not getting the 4 no matter what) This team has exceeded any expectations i've had this yea by far. I swore we were in the Zion sweepstakes, but dinWINdie and Dlo has made me believers.
Also, Jarrett Allen's all pro block hitlist is growing by the day.

Indiana Pacers beat the Toronto Raptors tonight, but during the game, Victor Oladipo was taken off the floor on a stretcher after suffering a serious knee injury. The Pacers believe it will be a season-ending injury for Oladipo. That sucks.

^I'll be interesting to see what the Pelicans will want for him and what other teams are willing to trade for him. He's a great player, but it's very likely he'll sit out parts of a season (and maybe playoffs) due to injury though.

Thumbs Up: Luka becomes first teenager to get a 3D
Congratulations Cleveland! You've got 10 wins!
GSW, OKC and Utah are the only teams in the WC who have .500+ records.
OKC may have had the best week of any team, continuing on a streak by beating Milwaukee and Portland.
LAC is on the road to redemption, having won every game last week. Utah also won all week.
Raptors doing OK without Kawhi. Sure, it was just games against Phoenix and Memphis, but still.
Thon Maker wants out of Milwaukee.
Carmelo is now with the Bulls, at least for another five minutes before they release him.

A little wrinkle to the AD situation. Boston can't trade for him until the offseason unless they Trade Kyrie. Both players are on Rose rule contracts, and the cba says teams can't have two guys. They'd have to wait and resign Kyrie on a new contract.
Gonna be biased and say it. A Nets package would be better than anything the Lakers can get. A package of Allen levert Crabbe and picks are better than whatever the Lakers could give. The old caveat is LeVerts health. Though as a realistic Nets fan, we have no shot at AD and hope we knock it out the park in FA and convince someone to sign. Davis is going to the Lakers full stop

Until you mentioned it, I never heard of this "Rose Rule." Here's an explanation of it, from a Washington Post article today ():
I also didn't realize that the NBA trade deadline is next week, February 7. Except for the possibility of AD being traded, it doesn't seem like there's much going on. By the sounds of it, next week might just be a series of trades featuring "average joes" and expiring contracts. Hard to believe an AD trade actually happens before the deadline...if you're Pelicans' management, why do it now? Wait for the Celtics to enter the sweepstakes this summer.

to put it in perspective the Nix haven't extended a draftees contract since Charlie Ward in the 90s. Every pick since him has been off the team before the rookie contract expired.

Also tonight...Lebron James returned and the Lakers beat the Clippers in OT. The Pacers lost again; they've lost all 4 games without Oladipo, makes you wonder just how far down the standings they'll slide by season's end. Oh, and the Sixers went into Golden State and ended the Warriors' 11-game winning streak.
As for the Porzingis trade, I guess the Knicks made the best out of a bad situation, as he apparently was frustrated with the franchise and wanted out. I mean, as much potential as he showed in a season and a half, you are talking about a 7-foot-3 player who is coming off an ACL tear. This deal is just about as risky for the Mavericks as it is the Knicks. Heck, I just hope this means we actually get to see Porzingis play this season, early indications are that the Mavericks will play him this season if he's all cleared, whereas the Knicks had absolutely no desire to have him play this season, mainly because of draft lottery odds.
One more thing...the All-Star reserves were revealed tonight:
Eastern Conference: Ben Simmons (PHI), Khris Middleton (MIL), Nikola Vucevic (ORL), Bradley Beal (WAS), Victor Oladipo (IND), Kyle Lowry (TOR), Blake Griffin (DET)
Western Conference: Nikola Jokic (DEN), Russell Westbrook (OKC), Klay Thompson (GS), Damian Lillard (POR), Anthony Davis (NO), LaMarcus Aldridge (SA), Karl Anthony-Towns (MIN)

Week in Review:
OKC and Denver probably had the best week: OKC have now won 7 in a row, (and are trying to make it 8 against Boston right now)
and Denver have won six and retake the top spot in the WC.
Boston briefly got to #4 in the standings; but the Pacers are not giving up their position without a fight, injuries be damned.
Philly got tough on the GSW, who, otherwise, might now be coasting on a 13-win streak.
Sacramento may be ready to make a run in these last 30 games; they had a hard fought win against Philly last night. They were 19-20 on Jan 5th and have gone 8-5 since.
Spurs may also be figuring it out; on December 28th they were just a decent 19-17; sine then they're 17-5; however...they haven't beaten a team with a winning record since Jan-10 (that epic 154-147 game against OKC.)
Cleveland beat the Wizards. therefore stitching together two consecutive wins for the first time since November. New York is now the only team under .200.
All eyes on AD and what happens next.

It was touch and go there for Boston for a while, but they pulled it out 134-129.

Well, apparently the Lakers have pulled out of trade negotiations - for now - with the Pelicans for Anthony Davis. Pretty much every Lakers player not named Lebron was included in the publicized trade offers; to say the rest of their season is going to be awkward would be an understatement. There was actually a funny moment from the Lakers' blowout loss in Indiana tonight. While Brandon Ingram was at the line shooting free throws, Pacers fans started chanting in unison: "Lebron's gonna trade you!"

My Sixers got whooped yet again by the Raptors tonight. It's so maddening to see how bad they are against the East contenders-Toronto, Milwaukee, Boston.

Huh, the Sixers and Clippers pulled off this trade about an hour ago:

Sixers get: (F) Tobias Harris, (C) Boban Marjanovic, (F) Mike Scott

Clippers get: (G) Landry Shamet, (F) Wilson Chandler, (F) Mike Muscala, Philadelphia's 2020 first-round pick (lottery protected), Miami's 2021 first-round pick (unprotected), second-round picks in 2021 and 2023 (via Detroit)

The Sixers will now have what looks on paper like the best starting five in the East: Embiid, Harris, Butler, Redick, Simmons. On the other hand, their bench is even more depleted than it was before. The hope is that GM Elton Brand will be able to find a decent player or two in the buyout market to alleviate that. It's also worth noting that both Butler and Harris will be unrestricted free agents after this season. The Clippers were ready to let go of Harris because they had no intentions of re-signing him in the offseason, they're looking for bigger fish to fry (i.e. Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis). LA also got some valuable picks that could come in handy for future trades.

Holy shit, LAL may be suffering as far as morale goes -- there's no way a Lebron team should be beaten by FORTY TWO??? FORTY TWO POINTS??

This whole AD thing is seriously messing with the younger guys' minds I think.
