With the trade of Porter and now Morris, Washington is $232,000 below the luxury tax threshold.

They should have never signed Porter to that huge contract. They're now stuck with an injury-prone, underachieving even-when-healthy John Wall, and now-well-traveled-bust Jabari Parker. Awesome.

Ernie Grunfeld is the Marvin Lewis of the NBA. Regardless of how terrible a job he's doing, there's just no firing him!

Well, yeah, when the second round starts. Assuming Milwaukee, Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia are the top-four seeds, the first round in the East won't offer much suspense. Although, I'd expect your Nets to put up a good fight.

The first game of the "Big 4" era in Philly went well. It was actually the fifth guy in the starting lineup, JJ Redick, who was the player of the game with 34 PTS in the win over the Denver Nuggets. Also, during halftime, the late Moses Malone's 76ers #2 was retired and raised to the rafters. As a Philly fan, I have to say it's sad and a bit embarrassing that they didn't do this for the man while he was still alive. I don't get it, Moses retired way back in 1995 and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001; I haven't found an explanation as to why this didn't happen much sooner.

Well he was being used as a transaction (nature of the biz) and then he ended up available so they signed him to a new deal (just for the remainder of the season I think) So they didn't change their mind, it's just his status changed.

Kawhi Leonard hit the game-winning jumper last night as the Raptors beat the Nets. All of a sudden, the Nets are slumping and have fallen back to the .500 mark (29-29). Meanwhile, after losing their first 4 games without Victor Oladipo, the Pacers have suddenly won 6 straight and are back at the third seed in the East, a game and a half ahead of the Sixers. As good as the Sixers might be now, they MUST get that third seed by season's end if they're going to have a legit shot at winning the East; at this point, a top-2 spot is unattainable because both the Raptors and Bucks are 5+ games ahead of them. With Kyrie Irving out, Philly's gotta win this home game against Boston tonight; a win would put them 2 games ahead of the Celtics for the fourth spot.

EDIT: Also worth mentioning...congrats to the New York Knicks for setting a new franchise record by losing their 17th consecutive game! They're not tryin' (to win) for Zion!

Ugh, another "close, but no cigar" loss for the Sixers versus the Celtics; they're now 0-3 against Boston this season. I REALLY don't see how Philly can beat Boston...or Toronto...or Milwaukee in a playoff series. Sixers always seem to get outplayed and outcoached when they face these teams, if the game's close (like tonight's) they come up small late in the 4th. Jimmy Butler is supposed to be "the closer" for the Sixers, in tonight's game he was fouled on a three-point attempt with under a minute left and he proceeded to miss two of the three free throws, keeping the Sixers down two instead of tying the game.

Milwaukee and Toronto are now the first teams this season to clinch winning records.

Cleveland, Chicago, New York and Phoenix have all now clinched losing records (and likely playoff ejections), and Atlanta and Memphis are about to join them. One thing they all have in common? No surprise, the worst home records. As of this moment, those six-- and Miami -- are the only teams underwater at home. (Currently, Miami is .407 at home, but they get by on being .500 on the road.)

Milwaukee has the fewest losses of any team, six against the West, eight against the East. They have yet to lose to the same team twice. That could change when they travel to Indiana tonight.
As mentioned above, the Pacers are on an incredible six game winning streak. They are now 6-4 since Oladipo's injury.

Poor Zion. If Phoenix has shown us anything, you can remain putrid with the #1 pick if you're a bad organization. And, New York is a BAD organization.

Friends of mine have said, "Damn, Phoenix should have taken Luka." I said, um, no. If Phoenix had taken Luka they'd be still be terrible and DeAndre would be thriving in Dallas.

The Bucks beat the Pacers in Indy, so they still haven't lost to anyone twice. Indy's six game streak comes to an end.

Just kinda wild night all around:

Joel Embiid went all Hardy Boyz diving for a ball at MSG; He missed actors Regina King and Tracy Morgan but another guy -- an NBA stats guy -- wasn't so lucky:

Isiah Thomas made his debut with Denver to applause.

I think the tweet is more of a sentimental one. you know, this was their last game against each other, oh, an era is ending, the classy guys, the soldiers, are leaving the building, blah blah blah

I think we can pencil in the Bucks and Raptors as the top-two seeds in the East.

I heard that Nike's stock dropped like 1.5% today because of Zion's Nike shoe exploding last night. I guess Zion has played his last game for Duke.

Sixers have to start their late-season stretch run without Joel Embiid; out of nowhere yesterday, the team announced he would miss at least a week because of left knee soreness. Moving up to #3 in the conference has just proved even more difficult; despite the Butler and Harris acquisitions, it's a real possibility that they'll be stuck at #5 at season's end. I assumed that the Pacers would fall back after the Oladipo loss, but there's no signs of it happening yet.

^Feels likle Boston has to be written off. Sorry but at thsi stage in the season, when you're STILL trying to prove you can go deep in the postseason, you can't lose to teams like Chicago, especially by 36-18 in the second Q. You just can't.

I mean, yeah, this is the time of the year when guys are getting tired and anything can happen (including Golden State getting beat by a Harden-less Rockets, Knicks beating down the Spurs)
but Boston is still proclaiming they're the team to beat in the East.

Want the Nets to play Boston in the first round. If we beat them I will be insufferable. INSUFFERABLE.
Keeping it 100, think none of the top 4 wants to play Brooklyn in the first round.I know Philly and Boston fans have been saying so anyway

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the possibility of my Sixers having to play them in the first round, seems like the Nets have played them tough every time this season and last.
After getting whooped in Toronto tonight, Boston is now two games behind Philly for the fourth seed. To your point, as much as I fear the Celtics, even I find it difficult to imagine them winning the East this year. Sure, they have my team's number (they beat Philly regardless of who is/isn't in their (Boston's) lineup), but it seems unlikely that they'll be able to take down both Toronto and Milwaukee in the postseason, especially when they will not have homecourt advantage against either team. Having both Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward back in their lineup has proven to be more of a detriment, not a benefit, to the team.

Yeah, talk about a "lucky" shot. Golden State followed up that buzzer-beater loss last night with a 7-point loss in Orlando tonight. Kevin Durant was out for tonight's game because of the all-too-common-now "load management."

The big news of the night? The Philadelphia 76ers ended their 19-game losing streak to the Oklahoma City Thunder!

It was shaky down the stretch, but they held on to win by four, marking the first time in over a decade (November 15th of 2008, to be exact) that the Sixers won a game against the Thunder. Both teams were without their best players: Joel Embiid missed his fourth-straight game (knee soreness) and Paul George was ruled out shortly before tipoff (shoulder soreness).

1. San Antonio has decided that either it's time to add a fresh face to the lineup, or they're resigned to maybe making the 8th seed this season, or a little of both.

2. If you're GS, you've got to have at least a little worry about Milwaukee now...

Wow, the Lakers (30-33) just lost to the worst team in the league, Suns (13-51), in Phoenix tonight. Lebron and his minions now sit 4.5 games behind the 8-seed Clippers (35-29).

That four-overtime shootout between the Bulls and Hawks was cool to watch on Friday night; I turned to NBA TV just in time, as the game was late in the 4th. After taking a lot of heat early on, Trae Young looks legit now. And while their record still sucks, the Bulls actually have a couple of impressive young players-Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen and Otto Porter Jr.

Dread's Nets are slumping, they've lost three straight and are 4-6 in their last 10. They fell back under the .500 mark (32-33) after losing in Miami tonight and are virtually tied now with the 7-seed Pistons (30-31). However, they could bounce back now that they're getting all their guys back, as this piece posted on The Ringer two days ago points out: .

Also worth mentioning are the Orlando Magic (30-34), who've won 8 of their last 10 and just hopped over the Charlotte Hornets (29-33) for the 8-seed.

^It looks like the Lakers don't care that much anymore. I'm guess either that most of them have gotten fed up at LeBron getting angry at them for making mistakes and losing and/or they know a lot of them might get traded for Anthony Davis, so they don't see the point in putting in a lot of effort into the Lakers.

It's about time Trae Young had gotten some love on here. I don't think anyone on this thread mentioned him being one of the top rookie prospects until he continued to prove everyone wrong. Everyone was talking about him out of Oklahoma, but then once he gets traded to the Hawks (Luka Doncic to Mavericks), no one cares about him anymore cause he plays for an Atlanta team. Trae Young is literally breaking a lot of records for a rookie with NO help around him, and John Collins (only in his 2nd year) is our 2nd best player on our team but he's been hurt a lot throughout the year and he's been out with a major flu virus. After Trae's historic 49 point game, he had 18 points in 18 minutes through 3 quarters and 9 minutes left, but one of the dumbest technical foul calls I've ever seen in NBA history got him ejected. The refs prevented him from having another 30+ point game. It shows how soft the NBA or even other pro leagues have gotten over the years. I guarantee you if the Hawks and Mavericks never traded, it be the opposite. Trae Young would be getting all the recognition and Luka Doncic would not. That's how it is being an Atlanta/Georgia sports fan because of our historic failures. If Luka Doncic wins rookie of the year, then I'm okay with that. But I don't care how the rookie seasons finish out, in the long run it's clear that Trae is gonna end up being one of the best scorers and assisters in the league, but he's already top 3 in the league in assists this year. All Trae has to do is become a better rebounder and lower his turnover rate. I can only imagine how much better Trae Young will be once he gets better support around him. Keep in mind, Oklahoma barely got to the NCAA tournament last year because Trae Young carried them, and this is the 2nd year in a row he's on a really bad team in Atlanta.
