The East 2nd round matchups are set, I'm still picking Milwaukee and Toronto as the winners. However, it wouldn't shock me if Boston beat Milwaukee. On the other hand, I'm really feeling like this year's 2nd round series will go much like last year's for my Sixers, where they get "exposed" and lose in 5. Not only does the Raptors' starting-five match up well against the Sixers' starters, but Kawhi Leonard will eat Ben Simmons alive when he's guarding him. The only way Philly can make this series tight is if Jimmy Butler magically becomes the guy who scores 20+ every game again; he just hasn't been that guy since he came to Philly.

Clippers beat GSW in Oakland AGAIN - 129-121. This is the first series where they've lost two games at home since the 2016 Finals.

the big story here is the Warriors were in Brick City; Curry was 7-15, Thompson was 9-20, and 4-11 in threes; Durant was singlehandedly keeping them in this game.

Lou Williams did his thing of course, with 33 points; and Patrick Beverly -- pretty much the shortest dude on the floor -- had 14 rebounds, the most of anyone on either team.

A sad note in the NBA world as Celtic great John Havlicek passed away.

I always thought his name was "HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!" Even though he's the franchise's all-time leader in categories like points scored and games played, he's like the underrated and forgotten Boston Celtics legend. Outside of New England, the typical NBA fan only knows of the ridiculously dominant Bill Russell/Bob Cousy teams and the great Larry Bird-led teams. The Celtics team Havlicek led in the 1970's was pretty good, too, winning two championships in the decade.

Oh, by the way, there'll be a first-round series Game 7 tomorrow night in Denver, between the Nuggets and Spurs. That game will start right after the Sixers and Raptors play Game 1 of their second-round series.

Shocking how inferior the Sixers and Bucks looked to their opponents in their Game 1 losses. The Sixers have no answer for Kawhi Leonard and Pascal Siakam, and Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons once again looked bad against a team that can guard them 1-on-1. The Celtics "exposed" Giannis today, kind of like how they did Embiid and Simmons in their second-round series last year. Needless to say, the Bucks gave gotta win Game 2 (at home) or else they're screwed. As for my Sixers, I'm not sure they're even gonna be able to win a game in this series.

Out West, the Warriors won Game 1 against the Rockets, it was close. James Harden and the rest of his team are bitching about the officiating already, essentially because Harden's not getting EVERY call. Tomorrow night, the Nuggets and Trail Blazers play the first game of their second-round series. Denver pulled out a Game 7 over San Antonio last night to advance, the game was close but it certainly wasn't pretty.

Despite turning the ball over 19 times and every guy not named Jimmy Butler (30 PTS) having a subpar offensive game, the Sixers grinded out a win in Toronto. Thank goodness "All-Star Jimmy Butler" made an appearance tonight; the only other time that guy has shown up for Philly in the playoffs thus far was the Game 1 loss in the Brooklyn series. For Toronto, Kawhi was awesome again (35 PTS) and Siakam and Lowry were pretty good, too, but everyone else on the team was throwin' up bricks. So, much to my surprise, this is actually a series going back to Philly.

Also tonight, Denver won the first game of their series against Portland.

Well you can't say that Bucks-Celtics escalated quickly; despite lackluster performances from Boston, Milwaukee was only up by 4 at the half. In the 3Q, everything went off the rails. Bucks outscored Boston 39-18. Funny thing is, minus that one quarter, the teams ended would have had to go to OT as the total would have been 84-All. So that one quarter literally decided everything.

While I thought a Game 3 win for the Sixers in Philly was possible, I did not think they were capable of doing what they did tonight. That performance is what Sixers fans like myself fantasized about when they first brought together this new starting five back in February.

For the Raptors, it's remarkable to see how the supporting cast around Kawhi and Siakam has faded. Lowry, Gasol and Green have been underwhelming while the bench guys - which was supposedly a strength of this team - have become nonexistent. Back when they first acquired Kawhi, the thinking was that he would take the pressure off those guys at this time of the year, which would help them all to perform better right now. Well, Kawhi's doing his thing, but the rest of this squad is still looking like those Raptors teams from years past. Unless they get their act together, Kawhi could score 50+ on Sunday and they still lose Game 4.

I actually watched all of that game. In the last minute of the 4th quarter and each OT period, it felt like the Nuggets made some mistake that cost them the chance to win. Especially the third OT, when they went up 4 with just 30 seconds left. I can't help but think that the 65 minutes Jokic played in that game will have a detrimental effect on his performance in Game 4; the fact that the Nuggets lost this game, and expended so much energy in doing so, might end up costing them the series.

As for the other West series, the Rockets got a win against the Warriors in OT tonight. Good news, because it did feel like the Warriors were about to run away with this thing. It would've sucked if they went up 3-0, I mean, this is supposed to be the marquee matchup of the second round.

Oh, and if Pascal Siakam is going to miss Game 4, it goes without saying that the Sixers have to take advantage and win today. If they do, it wouldn't shock me if Kawhi Leonard sat out Game 5 due to "load management."

Nice "rebound" performances by the Raptors and Nuggets after tough Game 3 losses. Fuckin' Kawhi Leonard, man, jumpshooting isn't supposed to look this easy! Seriously, every time he puts up a shot, I expect it to go in. Right now, his shooting percentages for the playoffs are: 59% FG, 50% 3-PT FG, 86% FT. As great as he was again today, it was the improved production from some of his supporting cast that put the Raptors over the top in Game 4 with Gasol, Lowry, Ibaka and Green all scoring in double-figures. On the other hand, the Sixers came up short in part because Joel Embiid was apparently sick, and he certainly played like he was. His production was poor and he made some awful plays in the 4th. Tobias Harris also hurt them in the second half, as he missed one three-point attempt after another; he was 2-13 on threes for the game. Well, just like that, momentum - and home court advantage - are back on the Raptors' side.

Bucks-Celtics and Warriors-Rockets will play their Game 4's tomorrow night. It'd be cool if all four series went 2-2, but I think the Warriors are gonna get the "W" in Houston tomorrow.

Of course, let us note; at this time Boston IS still in the running to for a Grand Slam. In the last 12 months, the Red Sox and the Patriots both won championships and the Bruins and Celtics are still in the playoffs. Until one of those guys gets eliminated, the Slam remains a viable goal.

The Bruins are Stanley Cup favorites right now, but c'mon, the Celtics are toast. Tonight's games did not go as I expected-Bucks win in Boston again and the Rockets even up their series.

^A friend told me that the Celtics were going to sweep. I'm laying off gloating until it actually happens, but yeah it looks like the end of the line for them. Of course, let's remember, of coming back from

But yeah, as I said earlier in this thread, Boston HAS the tools, but they haven't put together even one solid 10-game streak this season. And I don't mean 10-game winning streak, I mean any stretch where, win or lose, they looked like a team with an identity, a team which brought all its skills together every time and always left it all on the floor.

Note: it was REALLY bad timing for Kyrie to describe himself as a "genius in this game" a couple days ago:

I agree with some of what's in this op-ed but not the overall premise. Still, if you've been waiting for that NBA think-piece in which an Ingmar Bergman film is referenced -- and haven't we all? -- your dreams have come true!

Yep, the Sixers "mailed it in" in Toronto tonight. I didn't have to watch much of the second quarter to realize that they were going to get blown out. As soon as I heard Embiid was still sick earlier in the day, I knew they'd lose tonight. The team quit, and it wasn't like Kawhi was unstoppable in this game like he's been in every other game. This "As The World Turns..." soap opera bullshit with Embiid's health status is really getting old.

Also tonight, it was an easy win in Game 5 at Denver for the Nuggets.

Thankfully, there's one Boston team that won't win the championship this year. With their season on the line tonight, the Celtics didn't put up much of a fight in Milwaukee. The Bucks now wait for the Raptors to finish off the Sixers; as I said before, if Embiid is even the least bit sick and/or aching, the Sixers have no shot of winning.

EDIT: Warriors win Game 5, so the streak continues-the home team has won every game in this series. However, the main topic of discussion after this game will be the injury Kevin Durant sustained in the 3rd quarter; Warriors are classifying it as a "right calf strain", but many people feel like he actually injured his Achilles. The MRI later today will tell the story.

Meanwhile their other interest, Monty Williams, has signed with Phoenix. (Let's repeat that: A guy who's got an unimpressive 173-221 record as a head coach, declined further talks with the Lakers to accept the job with the f****g Phoenix Suns.)

This goes back to what I said earlier about the Lakers not being a desirable destination for most coaches.
Another takeaway; this is going to be an awesome summer for the Clippers. The problems in Laker-Land just make the Clippers look ever more like the model of stability.

Since this series is going the distance, it means that the Bucks will have a full week off before playing Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

I am not an NBA fan, I prefer college basketball. I will watch the playoffs like the NHL. By default I will root for the Flyers being an Eagles and Phillies fan. That being said, I just can't root for this group of Sixers. I was hoping they would lose last night and I hope they lose Game 7. Ben Simmons has been overrated since college and is afraid to shoot. It unreal how he will not take a jumper. His average shot this post season is just above 2 feet from the basket...pitiful. Joel Emiibid is a crybaby and acts like there are three banners hanging in the Wells Fargo Center. He should have been in the hospital and not on the floor for much of this series. He might as well played in a hospital gown in Game 5. I expect the Raptors to win. Brett Brown may or may not get fired but I would get rid of Simmons at the least, even Embiid cuz as Herman Edwards says the best ability is durability.

"If the Rockets win tonight..."

Yeah, Houston blew it! I actually had a feeling they would, games like that make me wish I actually bet on games. As former Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich stated after they won the second of their back-to-back titles in 1995: "Never underestimate the heart of a champion!" That certainly applied to the Golden State Warriors after KD's injury. As I saw it, it was foolish to doubt them after his injury. Not to mention, the trio of Mike D'Antoni, James Harden and Chris Paul just have a knack for coming up short in these closely contested playoff series.

As for tomorrow's Game 7's...I'll be rooting like crazy for my 76ers, but in my heart of hearts I'm not expecting a win. I also don't see the Trail Blazers winning in Denver. Unlike MLB and the NHL, where Game 7's often feel like "toss-ups," it's so damn hard for the road team to win in the NBA.

Frank Vogel will be the new Lakers coach. With Jason Kidd mandated as chief assistant coach.

Wow, this is going to be a disaster.

I think the best case-scenario is for this to be a Low-Key disaster, y’know with lots of rumours, leaked statements and what not, finalized with Vogel leaving at the end of the 2020-2021 season with a quick terse statement about “deciding to move on” and “spend more time with my family” and what not.

More than likely though, we'll get flat out Disaster Disaster with capital “Ds”: Open and public infighting, a meltdown on the court, more trades that just don’t work out and full on war between a Vogel who’s sandwiched between LeBron James and Rob Perlinka, with a side order of Jason Kidd.

More on Kidd in a second, but first; Vogel. Look I don’t know much about him. I’m sure he’s a nice guy. He’d probably be a good coach for, say 26 other NBA franchises, but not New York and holy SHIT not the Lakers. (I’m discounting Indiana and Orlando as well because, been there, done that.) The bright lights of MSG and the volatile Frank Dolan are not for a guy like Vogel. And neither is being in charge of the most dysfunctional cast of characters not called the Celtics.
The Lakers don’t really need a coach even right now; they need a dominatrix. Someone who will crack the whip, put guys in handcuffs, etc. Of course, Jeanne Buss will not allow that. The front office (and LeBron) want and need someone who is pliable. Who will do what they're told, be happy just to be here and won't give them any shit. In other words they're looking for the NBA version of Jay Gruden. (Washington NFL coach who, despite, an exceedingly mediocre record, has stayed coach because 1) he's obedient and 2) Dan Snyder can't find anyone else.

If you are a coach and won't be free to hire your own assistants then you're not being entrusted with the team. You're a puppet. And the players will not respect a puppet.

And I'm sure Vogel is approaching this with a healthy dose of cynicism (which all coaches in any major sport need); If it works out, great. But if it doesn't, hey; I've got something for the resume; I've got war stories; There's no shortage of people I'll be able to blame things on; and most of all, I'm getting a paycheck

And JASON KIDD!? He's not quite Rick Pitino on the scale of unscrupulous behavior (note: no one is) at least not yet but he's still only 46. The Lakers seemed dead set on getting him in there, which was a deal-killer for Tyron. Vogel, will, apparently take on Kidd, and of course, this begs the question, If You Want Kidd So Bad, Why Not Just Make Him Head Coach?!?! . After all, let's be honest, by the end of the 2021 season, he WILL have snaked his way into the head coaching position so you might as well just deal with Mr. Wife Beater's baggage now.

Spare me this BS about wanting Kidd to "mentor" Lonzo Ball. I mean, are we talking about the same Lonzo Ball who you guys were about to ship down to New Orleans?!?!? And now all of a sudden you want Kidd to "mentor" him?? I was born AT night, not LAST night.

I repeat, it's going to be a disaster.

What an insane finish between the Sixers/Raptors. Four bounces and in just crazy. What a punch in the gut. I am glad I am not a Sixers fan cuz I would be crying tears of buckets. Eagles and Sixers have now suffered gut wrenching losses in the post season this year...are the Phillies next? I sure hope not.

Congratulations to the Raptors, as they avenged the Game 7 buzzer-beater loss in Philadelphia 18 years ago (I was actually at that game). I had a bad feeling when Jimmy Butler made that layup and I realized that the clock had 4.2 seconds left on it. Actually, my reaction when I saw that play was that Jimmy should've kicked it out to JJ Redick in the corner for the chance to hit a 3-point buzzer-beater that would've won the game. But, hey, what can I say, that was a hell of a shot by Kawhi. There were so many ways that the Sixers blew it...from giving up 16 offensive rebounds to the Raptors (whereas the Sixers only had 5) to losing the turnover battle, 15-10. The big thing, though, was that the Sixers' "Big 3" did not play well: Embiid (21 PTS on 6-for-18 shooting), Butler (16 PTS on 5-for-14 shooting) and Simmons (13 PTS on just 5 FG attempts along with 5 turnovers).

As for the Raptors, I will be rooting against them in the Eastern Conference Finals. When these playoffs started, I picked the Raptors to win the East, but I am now convinced it will be the Bucks that win it.

Out West, the Nuggets went cold in the second half at home and the Blazers won. Props to Portland, but I sense a "gentleman's sweep" for the Warriors; Trail Blazers will win a game in Portland, that's it.

For an NBA playoffs without LeBron, these series have gone A LOT better than I expected. The parody. The crazy finishes. So many series that have gone 7 games. The crazy headlines. Where do I start? I would have to post have 5 long paragraphs to describe this. I couldn't even watch all of the great action because I had final exams in school to focus on throughout late April and the beginning of May. The 4OT game 3 between the Nuggets and Trail Blazers was epic. James Harden once again being non-clutch as usual come postseason time when it matters most, and the Rockets just can't ever let their Warriors demons out of their heads. I mean if you had told me that Steph Curry would have had ZERO points in the 1st half without Kevin Durant and it was tied at 57 at halftime, I would have looked at you like you were on some illegal drugs, but no..... I knew if Curry had a crazy 2nd half the Rockets were doomed, and it happened, and Curry had all 33 of his points in the 2nd half. Criminally insane, and the rest of the Warriors players showed up too including Iggy and the bench guys. The 76ers and Raptors were epic. Kawhi had 41 of his team's 92 points, and that was the craziest Game 7 buzzer beater I've ever seen my whole life! I didn't get to see most of the Trail Blazers vs Nuggets finish, but I'm going to be rooting hard for the Blazers against the Warriors in the western conference finals, and it'll be interesting to see both of the Curry brothers go against each other, and Damian Lillard & CJ McCollum continuing to do their own thing. Honestly I'm expecting a Bucks and Warriors final, which would mean in the 5 seasons the Warriors are in the finals it'll be the first time they're not the higher seed, and they'd have to start the first 2 games in Milwaukee and finish in Milwaukee if it goes 7 games.

and who's ready for the NBA Lottery tomorrow night? Oh man I'm holding my breath Zion goes to the Hawks with Trae Young and John Collins, but I think it's just set up for a bigger sports market like New York to get him.

but we don't know how this is going to truly play out. My heart is beating harder and harder as we get closer to this.

Well, you definitely can't say this NBA Draft Lottery was rigged.

Knicks, Suns and Cavaliers fans, not to mention the brass in the NBA league offices (like the Commissioner), must've been like:

After all the hype, it ends up being the sad sack New Orleans Pelicans (6% chance to win) that win the lottery. Right behind them at #2 are the equally irrelevent Memphis Grizzlies. As a Sixers fan, I guess I should be happy that the top two prospects of this draft - Zion Williamson and Ja Morant - will be going to Western Conference teams. Plus, with Zion going to the Pelicans, it makes it less likely that the Celtics will be able to pull off a trade for Anthony Davis.

The complete Draft Lottery results:

1. New Orleans Pelicans
2. Memphis Grizzlies
3. New York Knicks
4. Los Angeles Lakers
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
6. Phoenix Suns
7. Chicago Bulls
8. Atlanta Hawks
9. Washington Wizards
10. Atlanta Hawks (via Dallas)
11. Minnesota Timberwolves
12. Charlotte Hornets
13. Miami Heat
14. Boston Celtics (via Sacramento)

LOL the NBA is a COMPLETE JOKE!!!! The Hawks dropped to #8, but luckily we still kept the Mavericks pick at #10, but still, the Lakers jumping to the top 4 was rigged AF. I would have thrown something at my TV had the Lakers gotten the #1 pick and it was that close. LOL at the Knicks dropping to #3 tho.

I gotta admit, I liked the idea of Zion going to the Hawks. A Zion Williamson-Trae Young duo would've been fun as hell to watch. As far as teams getting a "tough break" in this lottery, Atlanta probably got the worst.

Well, whatever the league did to change how the lottery works, it had a huge impact tonight. There were three teams with the best odds (14% each for the Knicks, Suns and Cavaliers), but none of them even got a top-2 pick. The results of tonight's lottery might just discourage teams from going all-in on tanking from now on.

^Well that was Silver's plan -- looks like it worked. Of course, sure there are people pissed off, but there's simply no perfect system to both reward the worst teams AND ensure against tanking.

Besides, in three years, Zions' going to be somewhere on the west coast, trust me; either GS, Lakers or Clippers.
