My husband glimpsed Wayne LaPierre on tv this morning and said, "That guy makes my skin crawl."
I'm going to second that.

"Arm The Teachers!" "Not all of them, just 20% -- and give them bonuses!"
Four Aims are thus fulfilled with this:
1) Arming teachers, more guns - originally an NRA idea - supports the arming and militarisation of our schools. Dovetails with Dear Leader's military fetish.
2) Let's get ex-military and cops creating a military presence/subset in the schools - doubling down on #1
3) Let's pay those guys more than the regular ones -- creating another type of subset within. One that, let's be honest, would mostly favor men.
4) This is a given; avoid the real problem. Natch.
Have I ever mentioned that this country's doomed? Because it is. This country's doomed.

You know, an armed deputy who 'takes a defensive position' is quite a contrast to Antoinette Tuff, the unarmed school clerk who disarmed a would-be school shooter.
I was just looking up the incident and found that there's a very recent movie of her story on Lifetime on demand, Faith Under Fire: The Antoinette Tuff Story. I will be watching it sometime in the near future.
A few details here.

The police weren't in any hurry to come in, with all their arms and armour, and take over from the unarmed woman alone in a room with a guy who could have overpowered her and carried out his mission to kill school kids. I'm sure it's protocol -- they have to avoid ambushes and stuff. But, man, they waited a long time to determine that it was safe for them to come in.

LaPierre's favourite quote - “To stop a bad guy with a gun, it takes a good guy with a gun.”
Actually the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is not to let him have the gun in the first place; especially if the bad guy is a better shot than the good guy, or the good guy isn't in the same place as the bad guy when he opens fire. Prevention, not cure.

Not only that, but elementary schools are massive places, several acres, many doors, many ground floor windows. Architects never designed schools with the intent to ward off a paramilitary attack.
If someone wants to get in, they're getting in.

They send substitute teachers to schools they've never been to before. The main school district in Tucson was enormous, probably an hour and a half drive from one side to the other. I just looked -- 89 schools and 48,000 students. Years ago I stopped subbing in that district pretty much as soon as I started (and went to a small, nearby district), as soon as I found out they had an unbreakable policy of NOT allowing any subs to stay within ANY geographical boundaries, not even a ten or twenty mile radius . They said they thought it might be unfair to other subs -- that some subs might have nicer neighborhoods than others -- which begs the question of why some full-time teachers or students have nicer schools than others.
So if you live on the northwest side of town, they can send you to areas in the southeast. Parts of town I'd never been to, the far reaches. The first time I got a school over there, it was a huge long drive, almost as long as a drive to Phoenix (time-wise, not distance-wise), and streets I wasn't familiar with, so I kept circling the area of the school on one-way streets and roads that didn't go through. You get to the school, and every time, you have to try to guess which parking area is for teachers, and try to guess which back door, side door, or front door actually opens, and try to guess which way to the office to get the paperwork and stuff. Then off to an unfamiliar room, where you have 20 minutes before the kids show up, and the teacher has left instructions for you to make photocopies of something, so back to the office, racing the clock.
I hope they've changed their policy, if only for safety reasons. Being familiar with the school is a huge help in a security situation. Showing up a half hour before classes start isn't time to do much of anything.
Possibly the full-time teachers have a full day of training for code red situations, but subs just get a packet from the district, not specific to the school, telling you to lock the door, cover the windows, and move students away from the windows. That was it, circa my 2011 experience in a couple of Oregon districts. They are not hardened buildings. I look around the classroom, and there are eight or so giant windows all across one side. Covering all of them will take a while, and you'll be a good target the whole time you're doing it. It's still no possible way to keep someone from shooting out the windows and coming in.
I'm just saying.

Thanks for the link.
Kinetic energy goes up with the square of the velocity, so as a first order approximation, it would be nine times more energy.
Of course, that assumes the mass is the same.

Police work probably not a good career choice for the cowardly. 4 officers remain outside building during Parkland school shooting.

Colonel: Come in, what do you want?
[Private Watkins enters and salutes.]
Watkins: I'd like to leave the army please, sir.
Colonel: Good heavens man, why?
Watkins: It's dangerous.
Colonel: What?
Watkins: There are people with guns out there, sir.
Colonel: What?
Watkins: Real guns, sir. Not toy ones, sir. Proper ones, sir. They've all got 'em. All of 'em, sir. And some of 'em have got tanks!
Colonel: Watkins, they are on our side.
Watkins: And grenades, sir. And machine guns, sir. So I'd like to leave, sir, before I get killed, please.
Colonel: Watkins, you've only been in the army a day.
Watkins: I know sir but people get killed, properly dead, sir, no barley cross fingers, sir. A bloke was telling me, if you're in the army and there's a war you have to go and fight!
Colonel: That's true.
Watkins: Well I mean, blimey! I mean if it was a big war somebody could be hurt!
Colonel: Watkins why did you join the army?
Watkins: For the water-skiing and for the travel, sir. And not for the killing, sir. I asked them to put it on my form, sir - no killing.
Colonel: Watkins are you a pacifist?
Watkins: No sir, I'm not a pacifist, sir. I'm a coward.

It's strange how this particular incident is beginning to fire thngs up like none before. It's nice to see the NRA falling out of favour with big corporations like Hertz, but why now?

I've been thinking about this myself:
Here's my , a whole confluence of events;
1) They're teens, idealistic and full of energy
2) Social movements of #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, are truly entrenched in life at this time
3) They seem, in particular, to be a highly tight-knit community.
4) There's a burning sense of "This didn't have to happen" - seeing as how there were multiple warning signs that WERE reported
5) After of the 2016 Election with Trump and Sanders both encouraging "I'm Mad As Hell"-ism. Trump wanted people to "Overthrow the Status Quo"? Well what's more status quo than the NRA? Ironic, no?
6) There's a certain amount of political and media savvy here: Florida is purple -- it's necessary for a president, and for the Senate and Congress. The people know that, as opposed to New York, Connecticut or Texas or Louisiana, they are not going to be easy for GOPers to dismiss. As Marco Rubio discovered.
7) Part and parcel with #6, Midterm Election Year
8) Societies reach tipping points. We reached it with drunk driving and unrestricted smoking, and now it appears we've reached it with mass shootings.
and one more....

finally, 9) as far as different companies severing ties with the NRA:
I'm obviously biased big time against Trump so take this how you like, but I believe I'm seeing -- from Corporate America -- more and more in the last two years, advertisements and corporate cultures that promote diversity and inclusion. I've always said that you can't run a government like a corporation and vice versa, and man oh man, you sure as FUCK can't run a corporation the way Trump is running the country. Corporations want as many people as possible to buy their products. Inclusion is the order of the day.

That RAM Truck commercial using the words of MLK got some heat, but, one could say, their hearts were in the right place. This era is presenting companies with prime opportunities to be "on the right side of history" as they say. As that article at the link says:
Now this is hardly altruistic. We're talking about businesses after all. But interests are dovetailing; companies value young people more than the old, that's just a fact. When it comes to Republicans, many of them are old and white while the new generations coming up are far more diverse, and inclined to be left-leaning. Not only that, many have a global audience that they want to assure shares their values as well.
Well, unless you manufacture guns of course.

So distancing oneself from Republicanism right now, is something to strive for in the marketplace.

BTW, many people have said this, half-joking/half seriously, and I will repeat it myself:
If, back when I was in school, if some of MY teachers had had guns, I might not be here today.

Want to change things? Hurt The Money. Companies are walking away from them because the next generation of consumers is maturing into their new demographic and since they are anti-NRA, so are the companies.
Companies are scared shitless, rightfully so, that they will lose this generation if they don't act. The few that are staying with them are gambling that it's a fad and will pass, based on previous generations actions.
That is incredibly short sighted. The NRA's response to this shows how seriously they are taking it. The worm has turned.

It seems to me that one of the most interesting things about the MSD shooting is that the county deputy stationed there failed to do anything.
He made over $100,000 a year, and had been stationed at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas since 2009 and DID know the teachers and the kids, including the shooter. He has previously been named school resource officer of the year, and has been nominated for Parkland deputy of the year.
Not only did he not confront the shooter, it seems he did nothing to ascertain the whereabouts of the shooter, or to do anything useful. He wasn't constrained by protocols -- the sheriff says that he should have gone in. Three more county cops showed up and also waited around outside the building. When the city police showed up, they went in, and they were pissed that the county cops had not.

He may have suffered the freeze response. While fight or flight are the commonly named responses to danger, you can see examples of the freeze response in the animal kingdom. One's intellect is of no help, either, as you can't reason with your amygdala.

It seems that in the US the qualities of an educator is now to teach, to counsel, to give advice, to encourage, and now to be a gun toting protector.
