"A shot across the bows" is a well-worn metaphor used to warn somebody that you are prepared to oppose their efforts. It has never been understood as an incitement to violence. Your credibility is not served by trying to misconstrue it as such.

If this were an advocacy video for a group like ironworkers or carpenters for instance, then it wouldn't have the same violent implications. But this statement needs to be viewed in it's proper context. It’s a war metaphor issued by a gun advocacy group in a very emotionally charged video aimed at the people who oppose them. It's naive to say that it's not a barely veiled threat.

It isn't a veiled threat, it is an actual threat. However, they are speaking of a fight in the political sphere, not violence in the streets. Could it be that some individual will read more into it than they intend? Sure, you just did. That doesn't prove intent on their part.
Look, just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're stupid, Macko69. Again, they've been very successful working the political system, and they are reminding politicians of that fact.

The one thing that you cannot say about the NRA is that they are stupid.

^^ & ^ I never said the NRA is stupid. They are evil, but they aren't stupid.
Agree to disagree, Hardware. But it's worth noting, I'm far from the videos contained threats of violence.
Before I ever bought my first handgun, I attended a firearm safety. One of the things the instructor emphasized was that when someone is armed, things they say often takes on a new meaning. The example he gave: imagine someone standing in front of you telling you, "I really don't like you talking like that." No big deal. You might listen to them or you might just ignore them. Now imagine someone saying the same thing to you with a gun holstered on his belt. Even if they don't have their hand on the gun, the message takes on a whole new meaning. Context matters.
The one commonality that binds members of the NRA is that they own weapons which are capable of taking a life without much effort. Pull a trigger and someone dies. When the NRA puts out videos clearly designed to enrage their members against certain groups of people, we have to remember what all these members have in common. Context matters.

^ True dat.
If someone's on my property, it almost doesn't matter what I say if I walk out to the porch with a shotgun.
One of our contractors dumped excess cement on someone else's property (they should not have) and then called the cops because the property owner walked out with a gun. The homeowner wasn't charged with brandishing or anything, but, you know.
OMG. Years and years and years ago we lived in a big apartment complex with a cemetery to the north. Very quiet over there, but there was a tire store that had closed down at the front of the cemetery. Someone bought it and turned it into a bar with a chain link fenced outdoor area, and LOUD music playing in the outdoor area. I called them and asked them to turn it down. They said nobody else had complained. That was a lie. Neighbors told me they had complained (many of them). We called the police and the police did nothing. People called the bar and said they had babies. People called and said their floors shook. People called and said they worked graveyard and needed to sleep. No luck. Weeks went by.
One of my neighbors owned a stockpile of weapons including some assault weapons, and he had one thing that looked incredibly menacing, the most menacing of all, but it wasn't anything. It was just non-functioning welded black pipe with a handgrip and stuff. One afternoon when the bar was closed, the staff were meeting at the tables outside on the patio. My friend picked up the non-weapon, slung the strap over his shoulder with the menacing thing hanging in back, and he and I casually ambled over there and carried on a conversation with each other about general crap like car insurance, the local tech school, whatever. We walked right alongside the chain link and tightly around the bar, making a precise rectangle around it without making eye contact with those guys or saying anything to them or about them and their bar, then we made another crisp 90 degree turn and we paced right on back to the apartment complex. We never heard their loud music again. (I'll bet the neighbors wondered why, but we never said anything about it).

I've "grown" to hate and detest the NRA over the years. My Dad was a member for many years and it was actually a shooting safety education and conservation group! The NRA of today bears not a shred of resemblance of the NRA of my Father's generation. Not only are they an evil organization but they have abandoned the hunters and conservation minded people who actually got them off the ground.
Keeping that in mind, as detestable as they are, they aren't the only ones that category. Large corporations pumping millions and millions of dollars into the campaigns of politicians, federal;, state and local who at the same time pump killer toxins into the earth and water supply. When called on it they pledge to clean up their act but only move to another country where it is easier to kill more people and as a result, reap bigger profits. These are a variety of industries, most of who want, or currently enjoy, "relaxed" regulations granted by the current administration. The kill more people but do so insidiously and over a longer period of time. Adults and children, elderly; none matter to them.
The NRA sucks and is evil beyond a doubt but they are not alone in that club.

I didn't watch the video - there are far too many elements my blocker doesn't like - but the excerpted text is certainly disturbing. If nothing else, it would appear that Loesch and her NRA sponsors conveniently ignore all the slings and arrows the right threw at Obama. If liberals had responded by buying guns the NRA would be calling for conservatives to buy more guns because, whatever the problem is, guns are clearly the answer. What a surprise.

Nearly all the right wing does. Everyone decried Kathy Griffin with the severed head, yet when you bring up people hanging Obama mannequins from trees, which happened a lot, they ignore it.
They get all pissed off at people exposing Trumps golf, lies and videotape, yet they refuse to acknowledge or admit the 8 years of racism, hate and race baiting Fox did when Obama was in office.
They deflect. It's S.O.P.

The NRA has been getting more and more militant over the course of my life. I know former members of the NRA who left due to the change in attitude.

Pennsylvania Blue Mountain School District Superintendent David Helsel has decided that a bucket of stones in every classroom is the answer to gun violence. "He said the stone defence was intended as a last resort if evacuations failed... The unlikely defence was revealed amid a national discussion on gun violence."
I can't tell if he really believes this or he's trying to make the NRA look stupid. What I do know is that no teacher is going to thank him for putting a bucket of stones in a classroom -this definitely falls in the, "What could possibly go wrong?!" category.

It's exactly what John McClane would have chosen. A bucket of rocks, to go up against a semi-automatic. Maybe some packaging tape, too, so he can tape some surprise rocks behind his shoulder.

Emma Gonzales is one of the more well know and outspoken of the Parkland student survivors. She's a lightning rod for criticisms because she's very skilled at piercing the NRA narrative. And she's instantly recognizable because of her shaved head.
I had seen a picture of her this morning that bugged me. It was a studio picture of Emma ripping up the US Constitution. Well, come to find out, NRA supporters doctored Emma's photo in an attempt to make her look bad. Here's a tweet that explains it:

Well, the classmates DID die, and the Parkland teens ARE relevant.
And the NRA recognizes that they are relevant.
Too bad the NRA is jealous about the 'reality show' that is better than whatever the NRA can cook up.
With practice, the kids are getting more polished, and they are also going to age over the years. I'm going to view all that as natural.

The white male reality, and I'm 55 and white, is in for a rude awakening, because it's ending. These "irrelevant" kids can vote now, it's only a matter of time until the game changes, because there are more of them then there are of the other side.
Young people are pissed off and aren't going to stand for it anymore. Now, will they keep on when they get kicked in the teeth a time or two? So far the answer is yes.

Did you all see you brave young woman who vomited on stage?

Turns out that Sam is still recovering. She got shot in each leg and had shrapnel hit her face. She is still suffering from those wounds, but she got in front of that humongous crowd, started her speech, vomited, laughed it off, finished her speech, sang "Happy Birthday" to her late friend, then walked off the stage to thundering applause.

He said they needed to take action instead of relying on other people to fix things for them.
So, anybody who wants anything from Congress is not being independent and taking action in their lives, but relying on other people to fix things for them? Like lobbyists? Like the NRA?
I think the kids ARE taking action. And they aren't so much asking other people to fix things as they are asking them to stop fucking things up.

This movement, starting with teenagers and spreading, hopefully, to the middle aged middle classes is reminding me of the first time the western world realised that 18 and over students have a vote and a political voice - the anti-Vietnam war movement in the 60's. Kids have been relevant since that time and politicians will listen if they shout loud enough.

Exactly cormac. I seem to recall learning that very early in my life that the youth help drive LBJ out of office.

While I sympathize with the sentiment, I want to remind you that young people have always been relevant, and they will always need the support of their elders.
was incorporated in the months after Columbine. While the young people are eloquent and impassioned, they are just learning how to do things like get port-a-potties on the ground for large marches.
I barely remember the 60s, but my no-longer-young parents were both politically active. (I am told I attended the March on Washington as an infant, and got to DC on one of a number of buses my father helped arrange.) As young people, they opposed the Korean War, and as white people, they were eager to let others assume leadership in the Civil Rights movement.
They had been inspired and supported by people who were active during the depression. No doubt these people learned from World War One Veterans, who no doubt learned from the Anti-Imperial movement that rose up during and after the Spanish American War. These people probably learned from the movement for human rights in the Belgian Congo, who in turn learned from the movement to abolish slavery.
You get the picture: I've been told it started when one young person asked, "Am I my brother's keeper?", and slowly came to realize the answer.

I don't think there was any political notice taken of the views of teenagers in the western world until the 60's. Indeed no one under 21 got the vote until the 70's. While rock n roll in the 50's did see teenagers gain a seperate identity from their parents in terms of music and fashion for the first time, it wasn't until the 60's, and in respect of the war in particular, that students were able to lead a political movement that was taken up by their parents' generation.

Several states passed laws lowering the age to 18 in the 60's, the 26th passed in 1971. JFK actually brought in a lot of young people and, as has been stated, that youth movement helped drive LBJ away from a 2nd term. I for one hope they 1%ers keep ignoring them and think they have no relevance. Their arrogance will be their undoing and tt will only serve to piss off the youngsters, who will vote these idiots out of office.
Revolution coming. May not happen straight away, but they old guards days are numbered.

Yes, the concept of "the teenager" really didn't occur until Post WWII, when illuminated by Elvis and then the Beatles. Kids were regularly working in factories and even coal mines until a law was passed in 1938. Granted, we didn't live as long back then...but STILL.
