"Julian Assange['s father] has spoken out ... claiming his son was traded by the Ecuadorian embassy for a US bank loan.

“Ecuador doesn’t have its own currency,” John Shipton explained.

“It uses the United States dollar… You can’t get an IMF loan unless the United States approves it - upon agreement to remove Julian from the Embassy.”"

"Assange’s father claims Ecuadorian protection was traded in for a US bank loan"

"Wikileaks published 30,000 private and classified emails from the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Many believed the mass email release handed Donald Trump the presidency.

Grassroots supporters of Assange were dismayed – critical of his timing and the suspicion that the leaks came from Russia."

"Sweden will issue a European arrest warrant and seek Assange’s extradition in the second half of the year, after he has served a prison term in the UK for skipping bail.

Sweden will also seek to interview Assange by video while he is still in jail."

"The UK Home Secretary will have to decide whether Sweden’s investigation should take priority over a request from the US"

"Finally here are the charges Julian Assange has been expecting, predicting, and fearing for a long time.

He is charged with conspiracy to receive, obtaining and disclosing national defence information, a crime under the US Espionage Act."

But I thought we were supposed to hate the Russians most of all? Isn't that the progressive line we must toe? We the progressives who despise xenophobes, but must also remember to always hate the sneaky Russians, cuz "better dead than Red" - right? Only also remember to bring up the horror of McCarthyism since that also provoked a Red Scare of anti-communism.

Damn, as a liberal, I must confess it is really hard to keep track of who the opponent du jour is.

I'm old enough to remember when Obama scored big cool-guy points for his rejoinder to Mitt Romney about the threat of Russia. Obama took the lazy "woke" line about how the cold war was over, and the "1980s called and they want their foreign policy back."

HA! Remember that?? That was a good one. Helped Obama win a 2nd term. Remember how woke that was guys?

Remember how woke it was to remind the world that we don't need to be so concerned with "muh Russia" anymore?

Member? It was so long ago... But that's all changed since the Orange Menace took over. Now we are the ones calling the 1980s to get that foreign policy re-re-gifted?

"Yeah, 1980s? Sorry, hate to be a nuisance, but remember when we borrowed your foreign policy - yeah you know, the one specifically about Russia? Yeah and we gave it back to you? Remember? I know this is awkward, but uh, well, turns out we kinda sorta need that back like, extra urgently?"

No wonder so many liberals are going insane and eating their own...

I don't know of anyone who has advocated a return to the cold war or the red scare.

"Trust, but verify." -- Ronald Reagan.

Caution with the Russians is advisable, and characterizing it in the overblown exaggerated way that you just did seems disingenuous.

No, we don't need a return to the 80's. But the Russians trying to hack election results is an actual problem. I do not consider it any sort of duty to ignore that. Things change. It's not the 80's. The Russians are doing things now, and we do need to respond to the things that *are* happening now. Ignoring it is not a thing.

What are you suggesting we do about the actual things that Russians are actually doing?

^^, ^ Ummm... don't we all now know the Soviet Union was actually falling apart in the 80s. America knew this at the time, yet fed the world a narrative that they were a world power inexorably plotting to take over the world. (I grew up in the 80s believing nuclear with Russia was an inevitability.)

Similarly, complaining that another country was interfering in its electoral process, from a country that stomps around the world believing it has a god-given write to determine who governs any other country?

Ah good old whataboutism. Never gets old.

Putin is a murderous POS dictator who kills journalists and anyone else who opposes him.

Don't know about you but I don't like dictators and don't feel the need to defend them or their shitty actions.

That the US is often hypocritical and brutal doesn't make the Russian government any less of a disaster for its people or its neighbours.

^ Huh? Raising that America complaining about another country interfering in its political process, when it regularly interferes in that of other countries, is 'whataboutism'?

(Following on from your comment, a lot of that interference is actually to put/keep murderous dictators in power.)

Back on thread topic.
