Well if there was any doubt about the monumental hypocrisy of the "Religious Right" after Newt, Denny Hastert, Josh Duggar, Bristol Palin, David Vitter, and Scott DesJarlais*, there certainly isn't anymore after Ala. Gov. Robert Bentley, and their embrace of The thrice-married, admitted-adulterer, casino-owning, vodka-branding Donald.

*Tennesee Congressman who campaigned on Tea Party and Family Values, complete with anti-abortion platform. [link inactive:404 - Page not found]Was also a married doctor who admitted having sex with at least two patients and paying one of them to have an abortion. As well as his wife. He's been re-elected twice of course. </i

I still manage to get surprised by the unprofessionalism of state politics. These guys represent hundreds of thousands if not millions but it is embarrassing for a first world, economic super power to have these scandals and circuses going on.

The House erupted in chaos Thursday morning with Democrats crying foul after Republicans hastily convinced a few of their own to switch their votes and narrowly block an amendment intended to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from discrimination.
It was an unruly scene on the floor, with Democrats chanting "shame!" after GOP leaders just barely muscled up the votes to reject, 212-213, an amendment by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) that would have effectively barred federal contractors from getting government work if they discriminate against the LGBT community.
At one point, a monitor in the House gallery showed there were 217 votes supporting the legislation, eliciting cheers of joy from Democrats who thought the measure might actually pass. But over the course of about 10 minutes, those votes suddenly dropped one by one to 212 — and the amendment failed.

Amazing stuff.
The Repblican lawmakers at all levels of government consistently push hard for tax breaks and cuts and credits and so forth for high income people; push hard for cutbacks to as much government and social services as possible; and essentially attempt to keep regular American's incomes as low as possible. However, they get all these regular americans to vote for them by rallying them around causes like "don't let them restrict someone from getting a gun, don't let them gay people get married, don't let them women with a penis rape children in a bathroom" and so on. Issues that have no bearing on the regular american who lost a job, or can't make enough to buy clothes for the kids, or whatever..... just completely done to distract people from what they actually are doing for the country.
Just an utter disgrace. Our Conservative movement under our last Prime Minister headed in this direction too by stripping as many privacy and freedom rights as he could, cutting back as much as he could, while giving incredible amounts of tax reductions to his voter base... and then distracting them all with terrorism fears, and all sorts of bullshit nonsense; thankfully he was tossed from office and the Conservative movement will have to moderate again.
It does sadden me that our American friends are being wrapped up in this kind of bullshit while so many things have real needs that are not being addressed.

These Christians are just going in a sad direction. So many of them have progressed, yet here we are in 2016 with so many fighting to go backwards again. I get that you have to ignore facts, evidence, and science to believe most of the Bible..... but my gosh, for someone who is elected to actually research this kind of thing, to make comments like this is just repulsive.
All legitimate evidence shows the sweeping crime bills of the 90's locking people up for ridiculous amounts of time for the smallest of things is destructive to families, the economy, and turns small offenders into caged beasts who never can get back into society the right way.
You can't incarcerate your way out of social and economic problems. It just does not work that way regardless of the emotions behind the idea of anyone who even sneezes the wrong way should be locked in the hole for 10 years.

Congressman King has always been an asshole, but...
Just off the top-of-my-head, and immediately as I'm reading this nonsense, Goldstein wonders: What about China? What about Egypt?
Anyone want to bet that Texas schoolbooks probably don't mention the ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations?

Does the guy know anything about the history of the development of things like mathematics, art, architecture, music, and astronomy? Maybe his definitions of 'contributions' and 'civilization' are different from everybody else's.

The Republican candidate for the Oregon legislature and member of the Mt. Hood Community College board is under fire after posting on Facebook an image of President Obama;s face superimposed over Saddam Hussein;s body at the moment of the dictator;s hanging. George ;Sonny; Yellott has rejected calls for his resignation from the board, and insists that he will stay in the legislative race.
"Will I resign? No! I haven;t done anything wrong," Yellott told KOIN-6 reporter Lisa Balick. Balick was following up on Oregon Republican leaders who want him to withdraw from the House race in the 48th District.
"George Yellott's Facebook post is absolutely abhorrent," the Oregonian quoted Preston Mann, a spokesperson for Oregon House Republicans. ;He should immediately remove the post, withdraw from running for office, and apologize to Oregonians for posting something so blatantly offensive and disgusting.; Mann also denied that the House Republican action committee had any affiliation with Yellott.

In point of fact, many immigrants to the USA never spoke a word of English, yet they all became American citizens.

As related in the Elections thread, Trump has brought on Brietbart.com editor Steve Bannon. Everybody refers to Brietbart innocuously as a "Conservative website" but when you look at some of the headlines....

MODS: I've censored some of the more offensive stuff but, if this this violates board etiquette, then, of course, take it down.
But I would just submit, these are 100% actual headlines from the website run by a guy who is now the co-chief of the Republican presidential candidate's campaign.

There is value in Brand Names. Especially ones that are not protected by copyright.
You can't start producing your own cola drink and call it Coke or Pepsi...but anyone can call themselves Conservative. And then when someone comes after you and claimss you're not a conservative, you can turn it back on them and say "look at this RINO who's calling ME a fake conservative! What nerve!"

Arghhhhh. It's true, though, that George W. Bush was portrayed as a monkey by various people and in various ways, and already Jane Goodall and others have compared Trump to a chimp.
So, arghhhhh.
It's not the same thing to compare Obama to a chimp, because of other historical precedent and all that. Ditto watermelon, etc. Sorry the world is so nuanced and not as tidy as we'd like. The people who say it's the same thing know full well that it's not.

Would I be right in assuming that Goodall compared Trump to a chimp based upon his behavior, not his appearance? If so, then I have no problem with her doing so, as she would definitely know.

True, but I don't believe any elected officials did so.
And I don't think anybody ever portrayed the entire Bush family (Laura Bush, daughters) that way.

^ I don't really care if a businessman loses a boatload of money, assuming it is his own money. Or, if it isn't, that his investors were well informed about the risks. That's business.
My beef with Trump is entirely about his glaring personality flaws. In the short course of his campaign, he's been narcissistic, boastful, abusive, vengeful and petty, plus he's a liar. We already went down this road with Tricky Dick Nixon, I see no reason to repeat the exercise.

The sad thing is that even the minor party candidates are saying things that make you think "how could I ever vote for that idiot?" I've yet to hear anything out of Johnson or Stein's mouth that make me think they would be any kind of improvement over the idiots the two main parties are running.
