^^I've had that on my list for years. Unfortunately I haven't been able to convince myself to read it.

I've read a good number of the books in this series. They're very good, but the author's style of prose is a little bit difficult at first.

^ I couldn't agree more. The first time I tried to read this I found it very off-putting and stopped reading about 50 pages in.
I decided to give it another go and since I was more prepared for how the writing was going to be I gave it more leeway and once I was about 100 pages in I was hooked.

In the last few months, I have read three books giving inside looks at fairly recent history:
The Secret War Against Hanoi by Richard H. Schultz, Jr. deals with U.S. covert operations during the Vietnam war. Most striking is not only how ineffective these operations were, but how much they were undermined by obstruction from both the military and the State Department.
At the Highest Levels: The Inside Story of the End of the Cold War by Michael R. Beschloss and Strobe Talbott. This book provides a detailed look at the interactions between the Bush administration and Gorbachev during the years leading to the breakdown of the Soviet Union.
Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers by Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg's memoir gives a riveting account of his personal journey from Rand Corp. and Defense Department researcher to anti-war protester and the leaking of the Pentagon papers.
