^ Yowza that's going to take you a while... Which publisher? It's difficult to find the entire thing in one volume.

^It's the 1966 version from Castle Books. This may be the first time that I've read it in full since I was a kid, when the only way to read it was to sneakily slip it out of my dad's library.
I began on the 28th of last month, so it took me almost four weeks. It's probably the fastest that I've gotten through a book (relative to length), in quite awhile. I was sure that I wouldn't finish until early August.

You read about 1000 pages a week. That's extraordinary.

^I'd guess that my choice to read rather than sleep through the flight to London, the train ride to Berlin, and the flight back home probably made the difference. That adds up in length to a good day and a half of nonstop reading right there, although I didn't consider that at the time.

^It depends in part on the book for me. My Secret Life is long, but otherwise isn't challenging. No need to take notes or stop and think for hours about what I just read. It's a very simple book. What I'm reading now is less than half the length of My Secret Life, but it feels more substantial to me. I'm feeling the need to take notes, even though I've already done so before. It's going to take awhile.

I read the entirety of Confederacy of Dunces on a train ride from New Orleans to New York (non stop, 42hrs). I would fall asleep at will, wake up with book still in hand and carry on reading. Never done anything like that before or since.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures by Phoebe Gloeckner.
Now that multiple contemporary novels have been very effectively adapted as miniseries or limited series, and The Time Traveler's Wife is being readapted as a miniseries (I love the film, but I want a fuller adaptation), I wish that someone would bring The Diary of a Teenage Girl to the small screen.

These are two of my favorite books of all time.
I needed to read The Comedy many times to fully appreciate it.
Still, I was young when I first read it, and the book is very much a work of middle age. (I guessing you figured that out after the first line.) So you may get more out of your first read than I did.
As you read Inferno, keep in mind that everyone the Pilgrim meets is damned, and that he is very early in his journey. Often the "lessons" he "learns" in hell are the exact opposite of the lessons he will learn in heaven.
As you read Inferno, ask yourself about people who commit multiple sins. For instance, where would you find a pagan who committed suicide?
I'm guessing you know the answer already. But if you want to know the Poet's thoughts on this question, don't assume Inferno 4 settles the question.

Neech and CL and anyone else who has finished War and Peace - does it become as readable as Anna Karenina? or other Tolstoy books? It's the only one I haven't read. The commitment is monumental. Resurrection is one of my favorite books of all time.

^ War and Peace has a much larger sweep than Anna Karenina, and that makes it harder to keep track of the characters etc.. (For instance, the first scene is set at a party, so you meet lots and lots of people– most of whom will play little role in the novel.)
I had to read it a second time to really enjoy it. I would recommend doing something like reading the cliff notes (or some other short summary) of each chapter before you start the chapter. (I didn't do this, which is part of why I needed to read it a second time to appreciate it.) Even on second reading, I found myself referring to the family trees pretty often.
I wasn't as taken by Resurrection, which may indicate that I need to read it a second time.

My advice:
Watch the first episode of this BBC production:
/>It is the opening scene in novel and introduces you to most of the main characters. This will give you a face to "hang" on the characters. It will additionally create the atmosphere of the era for you.
Then start the novel.
The hard part of reading a novel with a lot of characters is creating a face for each character and fixing it in your mind.
As mentioned above, the opening of the novel introduces not only most of main characters, but a lot of characters who will play little to no role in the rest of the book. It's a serious technical flaw and caused a problem when the book was published. It was released serially and a lot of the readers kept waiting for the appearance of the insignificant characters in the first chapter.

The Genius of Impeachment by John Nichols
This interesting little book was published in 2006 during the Bush administration. It lays out a short history of the idea and use of impeachment while building up to an argument that Bush and Cheney should be (now, should have been) impeached, though of course you may draw more contemporary conclusions if you wish. Perhaps most interesting are the extensive quotes from our founding fathers showing that they regarded impeachment not as an extreme, last-ditch measure but almost as a normal part of the political process. An entertaining and enlightening quick read.
