I've just got around seeing Brain On Fire, and as performances were great the actors playing Susannha's parents were not how I pictured them when reading her book, and some scenes were too overdramatic.

The Reapers by John Connolly

Charlie Parker who is the main character throughout Connolly's novels was hardly in this one but it was interesting getting a detailed origin story for the recurring Louis character.

The Lovers by John Connolly

I was thinking while I was reading it that it would end up being my favorite in the Charlie Parker series. Connolly was hinting at revealing the origin of the super natural element of Parker's nature that was mentioned in The Black Angel but then didn't. Still though, for me this would be in the top three of the series.

^ Bob, I love Isabel Allende. Have you read Luis Alberto Urrea's The Hummingbird's Daughter? Same sort of magic, epic storytelling.

I second the recommendation of Hummingbird's Daughter, a lovely book.

I just finished Anthony Trollope's The Eustace Diamonds, another recent dip into Victorian novels after Eliot's Middlemarch. Both are well worth reading. Eliot, I felt, was the more impressive writer and her razor sharp, often biting characterizations were stunning. Trollope's characters were equally rich and he didn't have Eliot's frequent long, dreary passages (though perhaps I was just in a more attentive state of mind when I was reading Eustace). Anyway, it was a lot of fun and the main character, bad girl Lady Eustace, was a breathtaking creation -- he managed to make us hate the character and still have still have sympathy for her.

Good heavens, does this mean I'll be reading Thackeray next?

Steph -- I haven't read anything by Urrea yet, but on your recommendation I will.

I read Allende's "Zorro" a couple of years ago, and really liked it. "The House of the Spirits" was on my younger son's 12th grade reading list last year. So it was lying around the house and I just grabbed it the other day. Am certainly enjoying it. Wish I were fluent in Spanish so I could read the original.

Have you read Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay"? An American exercise in magical realism, for sure.

Bob, I did read Kavalier and Clay but I don't remember it (such is my aging brain :) I'll have to give Chabon's books another look. So Urea's The Devil's Highway is probably a more important book but it's not as beautifully written as the Hummingbird's Daughter. And these days I'm an escapist reader.

For escapist fare, a very entertaining book by Michael Chabon is Summerland, a melange of baseball, fairies, Coyote the Trickster, the end of the world, and other charming stuff. The wife and I both loved it.

An added edit: Um, just to be clear: while I did find this great escapist reading, it does have a lot of dark and grim passages.

Appreciate the rec! I guess by escapist I meant the opposite of a non-fiction account of migrants crossing the desert, which these days is just too sad to read. And so I have Jennifer Weiner's memoir on tap for the weekend...
