Meh, unlike the Phillies, not much was expected from the Padres this season, even after the Manny Machado signing. The one bright spot for the Padres this season is Fernando Tatis Jr., that kid is the real deal. Plus, while he hasn't been spectacular this season, Machado's still been pretty good. The big question seems to be whether or not this highly-touted farm system of San Diego can produce some good pitchers.

On another note, the ship be sinkin' for the Boston Red Sox...losers of 8 straight games, 5 of those at the hands of the Yankees and the other 3 courtesy of the Rays (in Boston). They are now suddenly 6.5 games behind those Tampa Bay Rays for the second Wild Card spot, with the Oakland A's in between the two (0.5 GB of Tampa Bay). They may be able to get back on track this week, as their next 7 games (all in Boston) are against the Kansas City Royals and LA Angels; the Royals are terrible (40-73) and the Angels are right where they always seem to be, around the .500 mark (56-57).

^ As long as the Dodgers' roster doesn't crumble apart I don't expect anything from San Diego for years to come. Unless they hit on some prospects they will continue to reveal in mediocrity.

Friends -

The Padres' intrinsic problem is the Padres.

It ain't got nothin' to do with the Dodgers or the Giants or the Diamondbacks or any other squad that routinely finishes above them. No, the Padres worst enemy is the Padres.

I've got 40 years of a front row seat to testify to that.

*Sigh*

It's hard to feel bad for (cue Ron Burgundy) San Diegans because, you know, they live in San Diego.

Phillies currently on pace for 85 wins. Vegas over/under before season was in 88 to 89 win neighborhood. So, team not that far behind projections. Of course, fans tend to have their own expectations.
As for Red Sox, it's impossible for any team to go on long winning streak without good starting pitching. Sale, Price, & Porcello have been beyond awful recently. I say recently because Price was having a good season until a few weeks ago. Things could get better, but it needs to happen soon.

True that. Smile. There are a lot of reasons why I stayed out here.

Although there is a price to be paid to live in such a beautiful setting. For what it costs me to squat here by the Pacific, I could live really large back home. Or most anyplace else in the United States.

But as a die hard sports fan, it's still pretty painful when the local NFL team deserts you and the local MLB team can't ever get out of their own way. If I didn't have the Eagles, Flyers, Phillies and 76ers from afar, I'd really be up a creek without a paddle. And of course I went to Penn State, so I have them as well.

*Sigh*

Don't look now, but...the New York Mets are 18-5 since the All-Star break and are just a game and a half back of the second Wild Card spot.

^ Idt think they will get a Wild Card spot, I would be just as shocked as you. I think the Nationals will get one and one of the NL Central teams. The Mets could finish ahead of the Phillies cuz I don't see the Phils winning more than 80-81 games. Speaking of the Phillies, I heard on MLB Network Bryce Harper has just one HR since June 1 on a pitch besides a fastball! He is hitting a pitiful .183 against breaking balls this season. I can't believe he hasn't gotten booed more. I guess he gets a grace period this season but if he doesn't improve next season it will get ugly.

Yeah, Bryce Harper seems to be getting a pass from most here in Philly, including Mike Missanelli. There's the assumption that he's underperforming only because of the pressure of playing his first season here, that it has nothing to do with him declining or just not being that good of a ballplayer. I would disagree. It's crazy to say, but he actually reminds me of Ryan Howard...by that, I mean Ryan Howard after he signed that massive contract extension in 2010. The home run totals are dipping, while the strikeouts are going up, and when he does make contact, all too often he's hitting the ball right into the defensive shift. And, as you mentioned, he gets fooled by the off-speed stuff. In the 9th inning of Wednesday night's game in Arizona (6-1 Phillies loss), he hit a meaningless solo home run for his 20th HR of the season, making him the 64th player in MLB this season to reach 20. Think about that...63 players in baseball got to 20 HRs before this 30-million dollar player did!

^ Yes I've listened to Missinelli this week and he mentions a grace period for Harper. Frankly the grace period should be over cuz he has not performed so he should get booed. At 26 I wouldn't say he is in decline just yet. Unlike Howard Harper hasn't sufferd a catastrophic injury so hopefully he will be way better next season cuz that's when I will start to worry. Like I said if this goes bad it will be the worst contract in the history of Philadelphia sports.

1 run in the last two games for the Phils who are now behind the Mets by percentage points. Who would have thought the Phillies could finish in 4th place? I hope they just continue to fall down the cliff so Kapler gets fired at season's end.

Last night for the Phillies...11 walks 10 hits 15 runners left on base. Now a 6% chance to make the playoffs (according to fangraphs.com). This is why I declared the season over in mid June and haven't watched this lousy team since then. They better clean house at season's end.

As expected, the Phillies hitting coach became the first guy to get canned because of this disappointing collection of players. His replacement? Fan favorite, and former team manager, Charlie Manuel. Uh, yeah, I'm sure the GM and current manager were all for this; this "old-school" guy (Manuel) working with these "new-school" guys (GM Klentak, manager Kapler). The move is only temporary, a last ditch effort to salvage a season that's fading fast.

^ The season has already faded away, its been over for a long time. This move was too little too late. They should have also canned the pitching coach but they should at the end of the season just like Kapler. I am rooting for them to lose and to finish in 4th cuz a 4th place finish should mean Kapler is gone.

Phillies are 2 games out of 2nd Wildcard spot. It's not easy to stumble out of playoff contention in the NL.

LOL, that's the thing, the typical Phillies fan (like me) who follows the team so closely feels like this season is a disaster and that there's no way they can get one of those Wild Card spots. But yet, there they are, just two games behind for the second WC spot, not to mention three games behind Washington for the first WC spot.

It doesn't matter, they have been dead in the water for months. They are not capable of playing consistent baseball. Right now they have an 11% chance to make the playoffs. Why the Phillies play a "meaningful" game tonight I'll be watching a meaningless Eagles pre season game instead.

After the Eagles game was over I flipped on the Phillies game and saw Harper's titanic walk off grand slam. He has been heating up lately and at least this team is showing some kind of life. Can they keep it up though? The Padres series will be interesting to see how they respond after sweeping the Cubs. I still say this team will not make the playoffs but a walk off grand slam is always fun and very rare.

As long as a team has a shot at a playoff spot, a significant % of fans will remain interested. Being 2 games out with about 40 games left is close enough to keep most fans on board. I think you gave up some time back in July. That's your prerogative, but it's certainly not the norm. Philly fans have suffered through far crappier seasons than this one in recent years. I think many will cling to that 11% possibility. The off-season will be here soon enough.

^ I checked out in mid June. I don't watch other teams like I do in football and I am not a die hard fan like I am with the Eagles so its easy for me not to watch or care with so many games. I'm still not getting sucked in after the sweep of the Cubs cuz they can easily lose 6 in a row. The fan base here hates Kapler, I'm not sure how many haven't watched like me but no one likes the manager.

Manny Machado and the Padres come to Citizens Bank Park tonight and all of a sudden Bryce Haper only has one less HR than Machado and 17 more RBIs plus the Phillies have a better record and according to Fangraphs, Harper has delivered in the this season. Note how Machado is not on the list. Sure Harper has a .253 average but he finds a way to produce in big spots. Prior to his grand slam last night he was 0-3 but that was all forgotten in one swing.

That 9th inning rally literally started as soon as I turned the game off. My last live glimpse of it was bottom of the 9th, Phillies down 5-1 with 1 out, bases empty and Cesar Hernandez at the plate. As soon as I changed the channel, Cesar reached base on an error and the rest is history. I loved John Kruk's instant reaction on Bryce's walk-off grand slam, as soon as the bat made contact with the ball, Kruk just shouted: "Oh my God!"

And, yes, all of a sudden, Bryce Harper is hot. With his 3-run shot in tonight's game, he now has 7 home runs in his last 9 games.
