My apologies if it seemed like I was singling you out. I was merely responding to that general mindset (I should have made that clear). You're far from the only one who feels the way you do about it.

The Rev. Al Sharpton thinks Michael Jackson deserves being honored commensurate with his star status. That means a postage stamp, a national day of mourning and deferential treatment from the media.

I'm not sure there has been a funeral with this much coverage since JFK. That would include at least seven former U.S. Presidents (Hoover, Eisenhower, Truman, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, and Ford).

None of those men were as famous as Michael Jackson.
As a matter of fact, this just made me think of something. I think I'll start a poll.

Well, I didn't get picked for tickets to the memorial. It's not a surprise since my chances were slim anyways.

You really think Truman and Reagan (At least) weren't as famous as MJ? Not to mention that anyone who's been a US president has (by default) lead an extraordinarily interesting life worthy of celebration (yes even Bush).

The POTUS is only famous for as long as he's POTUS. Once he leaves office, his time in the limelight is over and the focus is onto the next POTUS. Plus, not everyone in the world cares, or even knows, who the POTUS is. So the POTUS is arguably only famous within the U.S. Someone like MJ, however, is famous everywhere, and his fame is not dependent on term limits. You can be anywhere in the world and say the name Michael Jackson, and everyone who immediately know who he is. They don't even have to speak English, but they'll know the name Michael Jackson. I'm not sure we can say that for the POTUS.

Best part about his death and funeral is that it more or less sends Jon and Kate back into obscurity.

I've been outside the country once thus far (I plan on going again this year), and I didn't get the impression that most people outside of America are all that interested in American politics unless it has some direct influence on them. Thus, notwithstanding some embarrassing public scandla or other irregular circumstance, such as being the first POTUS of color, for example, the fame of the POTUS outside of the U.S. usually doesn't follow him once he leaves office.

I think the memorial should have been held at the L.A. Coliseum instead.

I stumbled onto this entirely by accident today while listening to some Roberta Flack.
It was just so darned sweet. How freakin' dismal that it just didn't apply.

Most of them were probably more into David Hasselhoff with a couple of UFO/Scorpions headbangers thrown in for variety.
They also could have had Off the Wall. Adolf just mentioned his 1983-1993 stuff.

I've never owned a Michael Jackson album either, and I'm not even a fascist.
His music (excluding the iconic kid-stuff with the Jackson 5) never did anything for me -- but most pop music doesn't, so that's not terribly surprising.

[url=334389]<brPerformers John Mayer and Jennifer Hudson had also never met Jackson, Brooke Shields hadn't seen him in 18 years, and Usher and Mariah Carey both barely knew him.
I guess it was just another gig. Does anybody want to guess how long it will take for the DVD to be out?

^ Oh, fer cryin' out loud. If the memorial only featured appearances by people who were close, personal friends with MJ, you'd have a whole lotta has-been's loitering on stage. Be thankful they diversified.

It will be weeks before they figure out how much this actually cost the City of LA. Because they didn't have the millions they expected, they sent most of detail officers home early.

Yeah, a has-been like Smokey Robinson. Who needs to hear him sing when there's some 12-year-old warbler out there...
Best part was when Stevie Wonder sang part of "I won't go when they go."

So it was a requirement that the Staple center be used to celebrate his life? Was there requirement that the stage be filled with a bunch of phonies, who never met the guy.. This is starting to feel like a manufactured event, instead of an honest grieving by people who actually gave two shits about the guy.
I want to know who the bastards are, who will be getting the checks for this bs event.

The physics change when you are global phenomenon. Besides if you noticed the theme of the memorial was to remember the older Micheal before the drugs and plastic surgery. Lots of pictures and music of when he was a kid. While the Jackson family had a say, they did not put on this shindig. It was AEG that put it on. They convinced the family to go along with it for the fans. Most of the family would be more than happy to put this behind them.

^How was it a phony money grab? I've never heard of anybody being paid to sing or speak at a funeral. So there's no reason to think that anyone was paid to do so. You don't have to have met someone personally to feel like you know him, or to appreciate his influence and contributions.

^ There has been rumours that not only will there be a DVD(s) of the rehearsals of Michael's last rehearsals, but that potentially AEG or someone would be putting out a DVD of the memorial service.
I don't know what good that would do though. Anyone with TiVo could have saved it for their personal use.
And to Clam Digger and the others who questioned the people who performed at the memorial:
as noted, the memorial was not organized by the family. The family had their own private memorial at Forest Lawn. I assume Usher was asked to perform, because for awhile when he first started, he was compared to an early Michael Jackson in both vocal and dance skills.

With the exception of unknown homeless people the cost of the funeral should belong to the estate. The staples gig didn't have to be profitable, but a fee could have been charged to cover expenses, or the celebrities could have raised the needed funds.
Isn't California paying for other things with IOU's?
