Excerpts from the article:

A New York man is in custody after having been arrested and charged with threatening to assault and murder Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York.

Patrick Carlineo of Addison, New York, threatened to kill Omar because of her Muslim faith, according to a criminal complaint and accompanying affidavit.
Omar, a Michigan Democrat, is one of the first two Muslim women serving in Congress after being elected in the 2018 midterms.

A call was placed to Omar's Washington, DC, office on March 21, an FBI agent stated in the affidavit.

During the call, an individual, who identified himself as Pat Carlineo, said to a staff member: "Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she's a (expletive) terrorist. I'll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull."

Divisiveness is caused by fear, ignorance and stupidity. smh.

I was going to put this in the Darwin Award Candidate thread but because RonK mentioned that the candidate had to die or caused an injury to prevent him or her from breeding, I decided to put it here instead.

The whole article:

Police in the Saskatoon area are asking for the public's help in the search for two missing Indigenous teens.

RCMP in Warman, Sask., northeast of the city, say the girls were reported missing on Thursday.

They were last seen at Ranch Ehrlo, a non-profit youth facility in nearby Martenville.

Thirteen-year-old Shaunte Sparvier-Wolfe is described as about five feet six inches tall, 110 pounds with medium-length dark hair, and was last seen wearing all red clothing.

Fourteen-year-old Niki Scott is five-seven, 135 pounds with medium-length dyed red hair and lines shaved into her eyebrows.

She was last seen wearing a grey long-sleeve shirt with a black T-shirt over top and black track pants.

Warman RCMP are asking anyone with information about the girls to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Hoping that these girls get found soon!

Excerpts from the article:

If you’re having trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Symptoms of insomnia increased by 42 per cent from 2007 to 2015 among Canadian adults, according to Statistics Canada data released in 2018.

Sleep of poor quality and short duration is linked to a number of adverse health outcomes, such as obesity, depression and cardiovascular disease.

Many people with trouble sleeping turn to melatonin, a naturally occurring sleep hormone and over-the-counter supplement, to help them fall asleep. But experts say the supplement, sometimes packaged in gummy or liquid form, comes with risks of its own.

L-tryptophan is another alternative for sleep. It was banned in the U.S. for a while because of a single contaminated batch coming in (from China, I believe) decades ago. It's back on the market now. It's an amino acid. I haven't tried it.

But what I use is cannabis. 5mg thc and 5 mg cbd an hour or so before bed (1:1 RSO, as they call it -- but it's not RSO, it's processed with edible alcohol, not butane and other nasty solvents). I mix a syringe with 50-70 servings into honey in an amount equal to one 1/4 tsp per serving, so it's easy to get the dose right.

I had sketchy sleep and this worked wonders. My husband slept fine, no problems at all, but when he tried it, he was impressed by the deep, sound sleep.

In the past I had tried melatonin, but only for about 3 nights. I would wake up feeling like my eyes wanted to be pasted shut. I didn't want to use it.

Why did this happen? And where does the search for Timmothy go now?

As more details emerge, many questions linger. But there's one silver lining to this hoax that has gripped the country.

For three historically black churches in the heart of south central Louisiana's Cajun and Creole country, Sunday services will not be the same.

The churches in rural St. Landry Parish -- about 30 miles north of Lafayette -- have burned since March 26 in what officials have described as "suspicious circumstances."

"There is clearly something happening in this community," State Fire Marshal H. Browning said in a statement.

Another good news story.

Excerpts from the article:

It was Kimberly Sue Endicott's dream to go on an excursion to see gorillas in their natural habitat.

That dream seemed to become a nightmare last week when the California woman and her tour guide were kidnapped at gunpoint in a Ugandan national park, taken by gunmen who later used their hostages' cell phones to issue ransom demands.

But the nightmare ended Sunday when Ugandan security forces rescued Endicott and her guide. They were freed unharmed from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which borders the Queen Elizabeth National Park -- the scene of their abduction during a game-watching drive Tuesday evening.

Four other people taken at the same time were previously released, officials said.

Former Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke offered sweeping criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, outright calling him "racist" and an obstacle to peace.

Speaking in Iowa as he campaigns for the Democratic nomination for president, O'Rourke said the US-Israeli relationship was among the most important "on the planet" and singled out Netanyahu.

Am I anti-Israel? Am I antisemitic? No. I am anti-Netanyahu. He wants to annex the West Bank! Besides, isn't he indicted on corruption charges?

California Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday he was planning to send eight criminal referrals to Attorney General William Barr as soon as this week.

Nunes, who investigated accusations of FBI and Department of Justice abuse while he was previously chairman of the intelligence panel, did not say who he would be referring in a Fox News interview on Sunday.

Appearing on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures," Nunes said five of the referrals are related to lying to Congress, misleading Congress and leaking classified information.

The other referrals, Nunes said, are allegations of lying to the FISA court that approves foreign surveillance warrants, manipulating intelligence and what he described as a "global leak referral," which Nunes said wasn't tied to one individual.

A New Brunswick hospital has sent letters to more than 700 patients after two patients were suspected of having Creutzfeldt-Jakob, a degenerative brain disease that usually leads to death within one year.

Horizon Health told CTV Atlantic that one case was identified in January and the other in February. Both patients recently had cataract surgery at the Moncton Hospital, prompting the hospital to send letters to 700 cataract patients. Horizon Health’s Emely Poitras said that, “after careful review it was determined these two cases are totally unrelated.”

Although in rare cases the disease can be transmitted during a medical procedure involving human tissue, Poitras indicated that “Horizon uses modern cleaning and sterilization processes that make the transmission nearly impossible.”

A premature baby who was taken away from her parents has found a new home -- all thanks to a nurse at the hospital where the little girl spent five months without a single visitor.

Gisele Smith, as she is now known, was born premature in 2016 at Franciscan Children’s, a hospital in Boston. Weighing less than two pounds, she needed specialized care including a feeding tube.

“She was getting fed about 16 hours a day through her feeding tube and it was overnight while she was sleeping ,” Liz Smith, the pediatric nurse who ended up adopting Gisele, told CTV News Channel on Monday.

Liberals are defending Justin Trudeau's threatened libel suit against Andrew Scheer, arguing that the Conservative leader's editing or deleting online statements proves he knows he's gone too far in criticizing the prime minister's handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair.

"The leader of the Opposition pretends that he will not back down and he tries to make a show out of it," Government House leader Bardish Chagger told the House of Commons on Monday. "We know that is false because while he is saying that, he has already been editing online statements or erasing them entirely."

Scheer revealed Sunday that he'd received a letter from Trudeau's lawyer, Julian Porter, serving notice of a possible libel suit over a statement issued on March 29, in which the Conservative leader accused Trudeau of leading a campaign to politically interfere with the criminal prosecution of Montreal engineering giant SNC-Lavalin and directing his former attorney general, Jody Wilson-Raybould, to break the law.

The 2019 federal election is "very likely" going to be the target of foreign cyber interference, with voters being the most likely targets of this anticipated meddling, a new report from Canada's electronic spy agency warns.

The report is also putting renewed spotlight on the risks of not having more robust cybersecurity and transparency requirements for social media platforms and political parties in place in advance of this year’s campaign, given these two areas are cited as being potential targets for foreign actors.

"An increasing number of foreign adversaries have the cyber tools, the organizational capacity and a sufficiently advanced understanding of Canada's political landscape to direct cyber interference during the 2019 federal election, should they have the strategic intent," the report states.

Israeli voters were deciding Tuesday whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in office after a decade in power as they cast ballots in a national election that has become a referendum of sorts on their longtime leader.

Clouded by a series of looming corruption indictments, Netanyahu is seeking a fourth consecutive and a fifth overall term in office, which would make him Israel's longest-ever serving leader, surpassing founding father David Ben-Gurion.

He faces a stiff challenge from retired military chief Benny Gantz, whose Blue and White party has inched ahead of Netanyahu's Likud in polls. Netanyahu still appears to have the best chance of forming a coalition, though, with a smattering of small nationalist parties backing him.

It was about 2 p.m. and the teen was walking down a hill near a remote creek in Montana in search of shed antlers when he heard a thump. He turned to find a bear charging at him.

The 17-year-old was unable to grab his bear spray, according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and the bear pinned him against a tree and held him there.

"When the bear let go, the teen fell over and attempted to crawl between two trees and protect his head and vitals. The bear then pinned him face-down on the ground," the department said in a statement recounting the Sunday attack.

Two women who said they were attacked by men they believed to be their Uber drivers share their stories and give safety tips while using rideshare apps.

There is a very easy solution to this problem.

When you order an Uber or any other ride-share service, the service should send you a picture of the driver, the licence plate details and the make and model of the car.

For that to happen, before you become an Uber driver or any other ride-share driver, this above information must be part of the background check. Once verified that there are no issues, you are now a verified driver.

On an early spring day in 2018, the faint smell of formaldehyde floating in the air, 26-year-old medical student Warren Nielsen and four of his classmates prepped a cadaver in the chilly dissection lab at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

Similar groups of five gathered around bodies on the other 15 tables in the anatomy class, all eager to explore the mysteries of the human body they had seen only in textbooks.

The cadaver assigned to Nielsen's team was a 99-year-old woman who had died of natural causes. Her name was Rose Marie Bentley, but the students didn't know that then. To honor and respect the privacy of those who offer their bodies to science, no further details are given medical students about the person who had once inhabited the body lying on the silvery slab before them.

Thirteen wealthy parents, including actress Felicity Huffman, and one coach will plead guilty to using bribery and other forms of fraud as part of the college admissions scandal, federal prosecutors in Boston said on Monday.

Huffman, the "Desperate Housewives" star, pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to a fake charity associated with Rick Singer to facilitate cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the complaint says.

She faces up to 20 years in prison. In exchange for Huffman's plea, federal prosecutors will recommend incarceration at the "low end" of the sentencing range, a $20,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release. They will not bring further charges.

A federal judge will have the final say on the outcome for Huffman and the other defendants.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending his decision to threaten Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer with a libel suit, saying that “there are consequences” for misleading Canadians, which he believes Scheer has done amid the SNC-Lavalin affair.

“I think highlighting that there are consequences short-term and long-term when politicians choose to twist the truth and distort reality for Canadians, it’s not something we’re going to put up with,” Trudeau said on his way into a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning.

The potential lawsuit came to light over the weekend when Scheer held a press conference in which he distributed copies of a letter from the prime minister’s lawyer.

From what I understand Scheer has no evidence of wrong-doing in this scandal. It's still a "he said, she said" issue.

Btw - I never liked Scheer. He's got a smugness and arrogance about him that I wanna to slap off his face!

Singapore has seized more than 28 tons of pangolin scales belonging to around 38,000 of the endangered mammals over the past week, a global record that spurred calls for more protection for pangolins, which are used in traditional medicine.

The scales, which were found in shipping containers, have been linked to four species of pangolins native to Africa.

Officials found a record 14.2 tons of the scales hidden among packets of frozen beef on April 3. Five days later, they found 14 more tons in 474 bags in another container. The National Parks Board, Singapore Customs and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said in a statement Wednesday that the cargo was declared as cassia seeds. Both shipments were en route from Nigeria to Vietnam.

The federal Liberals say booklets Conservative MPs are distributing in their ridings laying out a long list of tax credits Canadians should apply for when they file their taxes have a glaring omission: the new carbon-tax rebate that applies in four provinces.

"That's atrocious," said Liberal Rob Oliphant, who found out about the brochures because one of the constituents in his Toronto riding has a vacation property in the riding of Tory MP Jamie Schmale.

The 11-page document says on the front: "2018 Tax Guide. Claim everything you qualify for!" Inside, a note from Schmale says his goal is to make filing taxes simple and that the guide contains information "to help you identify which tax initiatives are available to you and understand the changes that have taken place."

Ontario is one of the four provinces because Doug Fraud, in his infinite wisdom, decided to remove the cap-and-trade policy and thus, a litre of gasoline is now 4 cents more.

He's gotta go!

Excerpts from the article:

Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to be headed toward a historic fifth term as Israel's prime minister on Wednesday, with close-to-complete unofficial election results giving his right-wing Likud and other nationalist and religious parties a solid majority in parliament.

The outcome affirmed Israel's continued tilt to the right and further dimmed hopes of a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Re-election will also give Netanyahu an important boost as he braces for the likelihood of criminal charges in a series of corruption scandals.

With 97.4% of the vote counted, Likud and its traditional political allies were in command of a 65-55 majority in parliament. A couple of small parties were still teetering along the electoral threshold and fighting for their survival, so the final makeup of the next parliament has yet to be decided. Final results were expected Thursday.

“It feels like really looking at the gates of hell, at the end of space of time – the event horizon, the point of no return,” Carlos Moedas, the European Union’s commissioner of research, science and innovation, said at a press conference in Belgium.

It began in 2009, when doctors in Tokyo swabbed the ear of a 70-year-old woman and found an unknown strain of fungus that can infect humans and, in severe cases, cause a blood infection in high-risk patients. It's called Candida auris.

Now, a decade after it was discovered, cases have been reported in more than 30 countries around the globe -- including the United States, Australia, India, Germany, Israel, Venezuela and South Africa, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The US State Department has updated its travel advisories for 35 countries with a new indicator to highlight the risk of kidnapping and hostage taking.

The announcement comes days after American tourist Kimberly Sue Endicott and her tour guide were rescued by security forces after being abducted in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park.

High-threat countries including Uganda will now be labeled with a "K" in order to "communicate more clearly to US citizens the risks of kidnapping and hostage taking by criminal and terrorist actors around the world," the department said Tuesday.

We all know who is causing this. However, I don't have much evidence unless you consider calling African countries s***hole countries, for example. I guess calling Mexicans rapists doesn't help either.

Damn! I should have put this in the anti-FM45 thread.

I've tried to use the woven poly-something totes, but they are not going to be clean after you use them once or twice. Grubby shopping cart that's had drippy stuff in it, checkout counter that's had drippy stuff on it, maybe a milk carton leaking in there.

And washing them every time you use them would use up a lot of water and heat and electricity.

Our local food co-op has biodegradable bags for the produce department (10 cents each), but I've asked my husband not to use them, because he said he didn't compost them because they get gooey and weird as soon as you use them -- and I'm not sure it would be okay if any of our wildlife snacked on them out of the compost bin.

"Police said they were “invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum”.

Assange has been living in the embassy for almost seven years."

Excerpts from the article:

The Canadian military isn't letting its hair down just yet, but for the first time, women in uniform will be allowed to wear ponytails.

The move, which also makes nylon stockings optional when in a skirt and permits flat shoes instead of pumps or oxfords, is the latest effort to modernize the Canadian Armed Forces after the recent easing of restrictions on beards, boots and off-duty marijuana use.

It also comes amid a concerted effort by senior commanders to increase the number of women in the military, which has so far moved slower than some had hoped.

Excerpts from the article:

Tens of millions of people use smart speakers and their voice software to play games, find music or trawl for trivia. Millions more are reluctant to invite the devices and their powerful microphones into their homes out of concern that someone might be listening.

Sometimes, someone is.

An Ottawa cancer survivor is condemning anti-vaxxers, after she contracted measles while travelling overseas.

Despite having the measles vaccine, her immune system had been weakened from past cancer operations.

Jayda Kelsall spent eight days in the hospital and said her life was put at risk by anti-vaxxers after she caught measles while on a trip in March. Now she’s urging everyone to get the immunization.

Excerpts from the article:

A federal judge threatened Wednesday to temporarily block Carnival Corp. from docking cruise ships at ports in the United States as punishment for a possible probation violation.

The Miami Herald reports U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz said Wednesday that she'll make a decision in June, and she wants company chairman Micky Arison and president Donald Arnold to attend that hearing.

"The people at the top are treating this as a gnat," Seitz said. "If I could, I would give all the members of the executive committee a visit to the detention centre for a couple of days. It's amazing how that helps people come to focus on reality."

Miami-based Carnival has been on probation for two years as part of a $40 million settlement for illegally dumping oil into the ocean from its Princess Cruises ships and lying about the scheme, according to court filings.

Excerpts from the article:

A 48-year-old man has been arrested after a woman’s security camera captured a man rifling through her Vancouver apartment while she was out of town.

Queen Throngkumpol told CTV Vancouver that she checked her apartment’s security video remotely from Thailand where she is currently vacationing. She said she watched the footage after her house cleaner told her the envelope of cash she’d left for them in her underwear drawer wasn’t there.

In the more-than-four-minute long video, a bald man can be seen putting on white gloves after he enters Throngkumpol’s bedroom. He then proceeds to open drawers and the closet as if he is looking for something. At one point, the trespasser is seen stuffing an item into the pocket of his jacket before he leaves.

WTF!
