Excerpts from the article:

A 29-year-old computer scientist is having her moment in the sun after leading the development of an algorithm that produced the first-ever picture of a black hole.

Dr. Katie Bouman started making the system three years ago while she was a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The algorithm, a process or set of rules used to solve problems, converted telescopic data from eight locations around the world into the historic photo released Wednesday.

Awesome work, Dr. Bouman!

Excerpts from the article:

Lawyers representing women who suspect they were given a labour-inducing drug without their consent announced they have filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the New Brunswick hospital where they were treated.

Last month, Horizon Health Network confirmed a registered nurse at the Moncton Hospital had been fired after an internal investigation uncovered “strong evidence” she had secretly given the drug oxytocin to at least two patients, who later underwent emergency C-sections.

The nurse is accused of puncturing patients’ IV bags and spiking them with oxytocin without their doctors’ knowledge. Oxytocin is often given to pregnant women to induce labour, but it can cause rapid contractions and affect fetal heart rate if it’s administered improperly.

A Ugandan children’s choir raising money for poor kids to go to school in Africa is heartbroken after thousands of dollars and their possessions were stolen in Vancouver.

The Sawuti Children’s Choir, which is touring Canada for six months, was performing in a shopping mall on Saturday when their truck was broken into.

Chaperone Christopher Sparks says his heart sank when he made the discovery.

The choir is asking those who would like to help replace what they've lost to make a donation to the "Sawuti Choir" campaign through their Canadian sponsor’s donation page.

Direct link to the donation page -->

Please help if you can!

To the children of the choir, help is on its way!

To the fuckers that did this, the RCMP will hunt you down and find you!

Excerpts from the article:

Flooding has once again forced the evacuation of a northern Ontario First Nation that has long demanded the federal government move their town to a new location.

Roughly 1,500 residents of Kashechewan will be flown to Timmins, Kapuskasing, Thunder Bay and Cornwall as part of the evacuation effort, according to NDP MP Charlie Angus.

Angus warned that the First Nation could face “catastrophic flooding.”

In 2005, the Paul Martin’s Liberal government committed to moving the community about 30 kilometres up the river at an estimated cost of $500 million.

The Conservative government of Stephen Harper nixed the plan after it was elected in 2006, arguing the new town would still be prone to flooding.

In 2017, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government signed an agreement to explore moving the community. Funds have not yet been budgeted.

C'mon JT! Do the right thing! Fraud? You better help out too!

Excerpts from the article:

Britain's privacy regulator wants to stop kids from being able to "like" posts on Facebook and other social media sites as part of tough new rules it's proposing to protect children's online privacy.

Under the draft rules, which were released for consultation on Monday, tech companies would not be allowed to use "nudge techniques" that encourage children to keep using a site.

The Information Commissioner's Office said examples of "reward loops" that keep people using a site so that more of their personal data can be harvested include "likes" on Facebook and Instagram or "streaks" on Snapchat.

Ontario's battle against Ottawa's carbon tax gets underway in the province's top court today.

The province's Progressive Conservative government has denounced the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act as an illegal tax grab that will drive up the price of gasoline and heating fuel.

The federal Liberal government, on the other hand, insists it's responding appropriately to an issue of national concern -- climate change.

Public health officials are warning parents not to be fooled by claims that purposefully exposing their children to the measles virus at so-called “measles parties” is a safe alternative to the MMR vaccine.

New York City Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio made the plea at a press conference last week amid an outbreak of the virus that has prompted mandatory vaccinations.

Once eradicated in Canada, measles outbreaks have occurred in many countries this year. Canada has had 33 confirmed cases in 2019. The United States has had 465 confirmed cases so far this year.

The grocery and drug store company says in a statement today it wants to reduce the amount of single-use packaging it sells.

^^^ No, let's not.

The church was built in 1163, and has served that community for over 900 years. People gave for this church, worked their asses off building it, worshiped here in sincerity, christened their babies, got married there, and it was beautiful, a landmark of the city, and an architecturally important building. It is not a symbol of pedophilia.

If you value people's love and effort and sacrifice, the important moments of their lives, or even their interest in studying French Gothic architecture, it's a huge loss.

Can we just not.

The fire is believed to have been started unintentionally as a result of the extensive repairs that were being made to the spire. There are tons of scaffolds around the area.

And the first responders went into the burning building to try to retrieve some of the artworks. I haven't heard what the results were.

Of course, some idiot tweeted, "So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!" So I immediately concluded that he knows all about these things. His followers re-tweeted that 100,000+ times.

And of course, aerial water-drops are not generally appropriate for anything in inhabited areas, they are for forested areas. Part of the reason is that they can't drop with pinpoint accuracy. In fact, the streets of Paris are, of course, more narrow than city streets in the U.S., so their ladder trucks are smaller and of a different type. With the narrow streets, misdirected water-drops (weighing about 6 tons and traveling at high speed) could destroy neighboring buildings and/or kill people.

The stone structure of the cathedral was endangered in many ways. The wooden roof timbers are part of the support of the church. When they burn, the walls can fall. The spire could have wiped it out when it fell. The church bells are incredibly heavy, and are themselves supported by wood timbers that can burn. If they fall, they can wipe out all sorts of things.

The fire fighters make an estimation of what they can save and what they can't save and they focused on saving a portion of the building. Some were up walking on the belfry, indicating that someone concluded that at this time it's safe for them to be there.

They seem to be able to save a good portion of the stone walls and the north and south towers. The rose windows are probably gone. But they can rebuilld. According to fire fighters, an aerial water-drop operation would have destroyed the remaining building.

Well, I'm going to end my day by saying that Notre Dame will rise again.

There had been every possibility that the heavy bells, suspended from weakened, burning timbers, would pull down the timbers, which were attached to the walls, and would have pulled down the walls. But none of that happened. And there was every possibility that the falling spire might have take out part of the walls. But the fire crew did their job and saved the two towers and the stone walls. It is reported that some of the rose windows also seem to have survived, though some are lost.

It's going to take a long while for them to restore some of the supports to the building and make the building safe to work in, and a while for them to complete an investigation -- not just of the origin of the fire, but how it spread, and how they might make improvements that will help retard the spread of fires. And the money they will need is enormous.

They were having a very slow go of it raising money for the repairs that were already underway, but they already have one pledge of $100,000,000 from a donor who until today had not planned to help pay for the repairs. It's going to be interesting to see where this goes.

Given how often fires seem to start in buildings that are being remodeled, an obvious first step would be to better control where and how building materials get stored.

Excerpts from the article:

Canada has formally joined a German-French coalition aimed at saving the international world order from destruction by various world dictators and autocrats -- and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The initiative is part of ongoing government efforts to shore up international co-operation at a time of waning American leadership and Trump's outspoken disdain of institutions created after the Second World War, including the G7, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland offered Canada's support for the Alliance for Multilateralism during a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Dinard, France earlier this month.

Japan also joined the new alliance during the meeting, and Freeland marked the moment on Twitter posting a photo of herself with Jean-Yves Le Drian, Heiko Mass and Taro Kono, her French, German and Japanese counterparts.

Let the tweet storm of hate begin! Right, Donald?

A 103-year-old church in Cape Breton has been vandalized with racist graffiti a month after a community group saved it from demolition.

Members of the Stone Church Restoration Society found an obscene word, a swastika and several other symbols had been tagged on the back of the St. Alphonsus Church in Victoria Mines, 15 kilometres north of Sydney.

“I'm very distraught,” Melanie Sampson, the president of the Stone Church Restoration Society and a member of the congregation, told CTV Atlantic. “This building doesn't stand for racism. Never did and never will.”

Nova Scotia's top court will hear the appeal today of an American woman who plotted a Valentine's Day shooting spree at a Halifax mall.

The 26-year-old woman has argued in provincial Appeal Court documents that her sentence of life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 10 years should be revised to a fixed sentence of 12 to 14 years.

"They should not be on the streets and used for testing cannabis impairment," said Gray, who lives in Sackville. "I think the government legalized cannabis way too fast. I don't think it was a well thought out plan."

French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, who is married to actress Salma Hayek, is pledging more than CA$150 million to help rebuild the damaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

In a statement obtained by French newspaper Le Figaro, Pinault said, "My father and myself have decided to unblock a sum of 100 million euros from our Artemis funds (the family holding company) to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre-Dame."

Later, the donation was trumped by the family of French billionaire Bernard Arnault and his group LVMH, which owns 70 luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, which pledged CA$300 million.

A lack of financial backing is being blamed for the decision to shut down a program that provided medical advice to pregnant women and new mothers in Ontario.

The Hospital for Sick Children announced Tuesday that it was shutting down the Motherisk telephone hotlines it created in 1985.

“The decision follows years of declining grant funding leading to staff reductions, as well as unsuccessful efforts to secure an alternative host for the program,” SickKids officials said in a statement posted to the Motherisk website.

Excerpts from the article:

North Korea said Thursday that it had test-fired a new type of "tactical guided weapon," its first such test in nearly half a year, and demanded that Washington remove Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from nuclear negotiations.

The test, which didn't appear to be of a banned mid- or long-range ballistic missile that could scuttle negotiations, allows North Korea to show its people it is pushing ahead with weapons development while also reassuring domestic military officials worried that diplomacy with Washington signals weakness.

Separately, the North Korean Foreign Ministry accused Pompeo of playing down the significance of comments by leader Kim Jong Un, who said last week that Washington has until the end of the year to offer mutually acceptable terms for an agreement to salvage the high-stakes nuclear diplomacy. Both the demand for Pompeo's removal from the talks and the weapon test point to North Korea's displeasure with the deadlocked negotiations.

More relatives of Kawthar Barho were to arrive in Canada Thursday, two months after a fast-moving Halifax house fire killed her seven children and left her husband badly burned.

Halifax MP Andy Fillmore and the Hants East Assisting Refugees Team (HEART Society) say in a news release issued Thursday that an additional group of family members was to arrive, although it didn't specify who, how many or where they're coming from.

The Barho family arrived in Halifax in September 2017 as Syrian refugees and without any other family members.

A man is in custody after he tried to enter St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on Wednesday night with gallons of gasoline, lighter fluid and lighters, authorities said.

When a security officer at the cathedral stopped the 37-year-old man, he left the church and was detained shortly afterward by counterterrorism officers, NYPD's John Miller said at a news conference.

The man, who is from New Jersey and is known to police, spilled some of the gasoline as the security officer stopped him in the church and forced him to turn around, Miller said.

A "computer glitch" may have been behind the fast-spreading fire that ravaged Notre Dame, the cathedral's rector said Friday, as architects and construction workers tried to figure out how to stabilize the damaged structure and protect it from the elements.

The fire burned through the lattice of enormous oak beams supporting the monument's vaulted stone ceiling, dangerously weakening the building. The surrounding neighbourhood has been blocked off, and stones have continued to tumble off the sides of the cathedral since Monday evening's devastating blaze.

Speaking during a meeting of local business owners, rector Patrick Chauvet did not elaborate on the exact nature of the glitch, adding that "we may find out what happened in two or three months."

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is berating Conservative MPs for sending information to constituents on how to file income taxes without mentioning the carbon tax rebates to which they may be entitled.

“Canadians deserve a lot better from politicians,” McKenna said in an interview with CTV’s Power Play. “They deserve to know the facts.”

Earlier this week, she sent a letter to Conservative MPs from Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan -- provinces that have opposed the government’s so-called “tax on pollution” -- to relay her concerns about their sending information to Canadians without mentioning the rebates.

Two sisters from Saudi Arabia are applying for asylum in the country of Georgia after saying they fled there because of fear of their own family.

The sisters, Maha and Wafa Alsubaie, attracted attention this week when they established a Twitter account in which they said they came to Georgia because of unspecified "oppression" by their family and asked for protection and to be taken to a third country.

The sisters said their father and brothers had come to Georgia to look for them and that Saudi Arabia had cancelled their passports.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said Thursday that the women were taken to a centre for asylum seekers. However, it said in a statement that the family members whom the women claim endanger them are not in Georgia.

That bulls**t about allowing women to drive? A fucking PR stunt from MBS and the Kingdom! The mistreatment of women still rages on! #boycottSaudiArabia

An heiress pleaded guilty on Friday in a sensational case accusing a cult-like upstate New York group of creating a secret harem of sex slaves for the group's self-anointed spiritual leader.

Bronfman - the 40-year-old daughter of the late billionaire philanthropist and former Seagram chairman Edgar Bronfman Sr. - told the judge that she had wanted to help people through NXIVM but ended up dishonouring her family.

The eldest son and daughter of a couple who starved and shackled 12 of their children spoke publicly forthe first time Friday, alternately condemning and forgiving their parents before a judge sentenced the pair to up to life in prison.

Since being freed from their prison-like home more than a year ago, the two adult children of David and Louise Turpin described how they had gained control of their lives and, despite receiving little education at home, were now enrolled in college and learning simple things, including how to ride a bike, swim and prepare a meal. They are still thin from years of malnutrition.

"I cannot describe in words what we went through growing up," said the oldest son, now 27. "Sometimes I still have nightmares of things that have happened, such as my siblings being chained up or getting beaten. But that is the past and this is now. I love my parents and have forgiven them for a lot of the things that they did to us."

Police in eastern Mexico say gunmen broke into a family party and opened fire, killing 13 people and wounding at least four others.

The Veracruz state Public Security Department says seven men, five women and a child were killed in the Friday night attack at an events hall in the oil city of Minatitlan near the Gulf of Mexico.

A department statement says the attackers asked for a man called "El Beky," who apparently owns a bar in the city. It's not clear if he was among the dead. Officials say they don't yet know a motive for the shooting.

Federal and state police set up checkpoints in the region to help in the search for the attackers.

Police say a woman was hacked to death and a second woman is being treated for stab wounds after a killer who may have used an axe attacked them inside a Brooklyn apartment.

Police say the carnage was discovered after the surviving victim hailed an Uber outside the Housing Authority's Bushwick Houses at 1:30 a.m. Saturday and asked to be taken to a hospital.

The driver called 911 and police and medics responded. The woman told them there was a dead body inside her apartment. She told them her own 4-year-old daughter was also in the apartment.

Police found the dead woman nearly decapitated. The child was unharmed in another room.

Officers are investigating whether an axe found in the building's trash compactor may have been the murder weapon.

What the ....? Bumbaclaart! smh.

Excerpts from the article:

Police in Northern Ireland arrested two teenagers Saturday in connection with the fatal shooting of a young journalist during rioting in the city of Londonderry.

The men, aged 18 and 19, were detained under anti-terrorism legislation and taken to Belfast for questioning, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said.

The men have not been identified or charged. Police had said earlier that one gunman had pulled the trigger during the rioting but was backed by an "organization," and said they were searching for multiple suspects.

Excerpts from the article:

Some 200,000 bees inhabiting hives in Notre-Dame cathedral survived the inferno that engulfed the heritage landmark in a miraculous escape, their beekeeper said Thursday.

"The bees are alive. Until this morning, I had had no news," said beekeeper Nicolas Geant who looks after the hives which are kept on top of a sacristry that adjoins the cathedral.

"At first I thought that the three hives had burned but I had no information" after Monday's fire, Geant told AFP.

Excerpts from the article:

At least 140 people were killed and hundreds more hospitalized with injuries from eight blasts that rocked churches and hotels in and just outside of Sri Lanka's capital on Easter Sunday, officials said, the worst violence to hit the South Asian country since its civil war ended a decade ago.

With a curfew imposed, police conducted a search operation on the outskirts of Colombo, where the latest of eight blasts took place. After police moved into Dematagoda, at least two more blasts occurred, with the occupants of a safehouse apparently blasting explosives to prevent arrest.

Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena described the attacks as a terrorist incident, and blamed religious extremists. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he feared the violence could trigger instability in the country and its economy.
