Excerpts from the article:

The owner of a supermarket chain in Winnipeg says he doesn’t understand why he was ordered to close his stores on Good Friday while a cannabis retailer remained open.

“It’s just weird that you can gamble on a holiday, you can buy weed now on a holiday, and you can drink on a holiday – but you can’t buy groceries on a holiday,” Munther Zeid told CTV Winnipeg.

Zeid owns Food Fare, a chain of supermarkets with several locations around Winnipeg. He says he received a call from one store Friday morning informing him that a provincial worker was threatening to fine the store $10,000 and close it down if it attempted to remain open.

Excerpts from the article:

China, one of Iran's biggest oil export markets, on Monday criticized Washington's decision to tell Beijing and other governments to stop buying crude from Tehran or face sanctions.

China opposes Washington's "unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction," said a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang. He said Beijing's dealings with Iran are "reasonable and legitimate."

U.S. officials told reporters the T***p administration will inform other governments they no longer will be exempt from sanctions.

Excerpts from the article:

Sri Lankan officials failed to heed warnings from intelligence agencies about the threat of an attack by a domestic radical Muslim group that officials blame for Easter Sunday bombings that killed more than 200 people, the country's health minister said Monday.

The co-ordinated bombings that ripped through churches and luxury hotels were carried out by seven suicide bombers from a militant group named National Thowfeek Jamaath, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.

International intelligence agencies warned of the attacks several times starting April 4, Senaratne said. On April 9, the defence ministry wrote to the police chief with intelligence that included the group's name, he said. On April 11, police wrote to the heads of security of the judiciary and diplomatic security division, Senaratne said.

Excerpts from the article:

The Royal Canadian Mint is unveiling a new commemorative loonie today meant to mark what it calls a key milestone for lesbian, gay, transgender, queer and two-spirited people in the country.

The agency says the new one-dollar coin pays tribute to Parliament's passing of legislation that "initiated the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada."

It says the coin, which will be presented in Toronto today, celebrates "50 years of progress for LGBTQ2 Canadians."

But historians and advocates are raising concerns about the message behind the new loonie, saying it mistakenly suggests equality has been achieved and largely as a result of the federal government's actions.

Excerpts from the article:

New federal research suggests greenhouse gas emissions from Alberta's oilsands may be significantly higher than industry reports.

In a study published Tuesday, Environment Canada scientists say four major oilsands mines are releasing an average of about one-third more carbon dioxide per barrel of oil than they report -- a crucial number used for everything from determining national emissions levels to calculating carbon tax.

Lead author John Liggio and his colleagues analyzed air monitoring samples captured in a series of flights above the four sites during the course of a month in 2013.

While officials refuse to discuss specifics, the family of a 9-year-old girl who died by suicide is speaking out about the bullying she allegedly faced at a Calgary school.

Amal Alshteiwi -- whose first name translates to 'hope' -- died by suicide in March, following what her parents say was "tireless bullying" that resulted in her changing schools.

RIP Amal

Excerpts from the article:

Sri Lanka's state minister of defence said Tuesday that the Easter attack on churches, hotels and other sites in the South Asian nation was "carried out in retaliation" for the shooting massacre at two New Zealand mosques last month, according to a statement.

The minister, Ruwan Wijewardene, told Parliament the government possessed information that the series of bombings in and outside of Colombo that killed more than 300 people was carried out "by an Islamic fundamentalist group" in response to the Christchurch attacks. He did not provide evidence or explain the source of the information.

Wijewardene blamed "weakness" within Sri Lanka's security apparatus for failing to prevent the nine bombings.

Excerpts from the article:

If Congress doesn't act soon, tens of millions of Americans will only receive about three-quarters of their Social Security benefits when they retire.

Social Security's trust funds will be tapped out by 2035, according to an annual report released Monday by trustees of the government's two largest entitlement programs, the other being Medicare. That's one year later than last year's report projected.

The new projection doesn't mean retirees will no longer get checks in 16 years. But the program will at that point only have enough revenue coming in to pay three-quarters of promised benefits through the end of 2093.

A leader of an armed militia that has held hundreds of migrants at the border previously claimed the group was training to assassinate Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, according to court documents unsealed on Monday.

FBI agents visited Larry Mitchell Hopkins' Flora Vista, New Mexico, residence in November 2017 after learning of the alleged statement. Witnesses also reported seeing members of the militia with firearms at the home, the probable cause statement said.

The FBI recovered nine weapons and ammunition during the search, according to court papers.

The 69-year-old Hopkins -- who is also known as Johnny Horton Jr. -- was charged Monday with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition stemming from the 2017 search, according to a criminal complaint.

Excerpts from the article:

Disney (DIS) CEO Bob Iger made nearly $66 million last year, and a Disney family member thinks that's "insane."

Abigail Disney, the granddaughter of company co-founder Roy Disney, criticized Iger's multimillion dollar pay in several tweets on Sunday. Roy Disney was Walt Disney's brother.

"By any objective measure a pay ratio over a thousand is insane," she said of Iger's compensation.

Iger's $66 million package last year was 1,424 times that of the median salary of a Disney employee, which is $46,127, according to a study from Equilar. His pay was largely boosted by long-term incentives associated with his contract extension, which was announced alongside the deal for Disney (DIS) to purchase most of 21st Century Fox. This year, his compensation package is worth as much as $35 million.

Excerpts from the article:

Authorities are trying to identify a woman captured by security cameras tossing seven newborn puppies into a dumpster in Southern California.

The Riverside County Department of Animal Services released surveillance video of the woman pulling up to a dumpster behind an auto parts store in Coachella Thursday afternoon. The video shows her stepping out of a white Jeep, peering into a dumpster used for recyclables before dropping a plastic bag into the trash dumpster and driving away.

A man who rummaged through the trash shortly afterward spotted the bag and took it to the store. Authorities said the puppies, believed to be 3-day-old terrier mixes, may not have survived the 90-degree heat had they not been found within an hour of being dumped.

A big thank you to the man!

I hope this woman gets caught soon! Grrrr!

BTW - I read on CP24 today, the woman was arrested!

A police dog was rushed for emergency surgery after it was severely injured while trying to catch a suspected burglar who “actively punched” the animal.

Officers from Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in Florida received a call about a burglary in progress at around 12.50 p.m. Tuesday in the town of Milton.

A sheriff arrived on scene to find a broken window covered with blood, as described on the force’s Facebook page.

The dog, believed to be a Belgian Malinois, is expected to recover from his extensive injuries.

Excerpts from the article:

The owner of a kennel is liable for $4,500 in veterinary bills after a dog entrusted to its care became severely ill, dehydrated and fractured several teeth, an Ontario court has ruled.

In a decision upholding a ruling in favour of the dog's owner, Ontario Divisional Court found it reasonable to conclude that Maverick's injuries occurred during his five-day stay at Sunset Dog Retreat east of Guelph, Ont.

"Given the evidence in this case, it was reasonable for the deputy trial judge to conclude that but for the kennel's negligence in not inspecting Maverick and in not calling the owner to come and get him earlier, Maverick would not have suffered his injuries," Justice Nancy Dennison concluded. "There was no persuasive, non-speculative evidence to indicate any precondition to explain the weight loss or damage to that tooth."

The fucking kennel should have its licence revoked! And not only that, the kennel owner and attending staff should be imprisoned for animal cruelty.

Excerpts from the article:

When Julia Berardi was born in 2013, her parents didn’t expect any complications.

They’d already had two healthy children. “You sort of expect this to go pretty smoothly,” recalled her mother Jody Berardi in an interview with CTVNews.ca.

And it did at first. Julia was “pink and healthy,” weighing in at eight pounds and five ounces. But they soon noticed irregularities. Jody was only able to nurse her for a brief time before Julia would fall asleep for five-hour stretches. When they took her home two days later, the baby projectile vomited in the car. As the patterns worsened to a point where they couldn’t wake her up, Julia was readmitted to the hospital.

“We didn’t know what was going on. It’s even worse when you don’t get answers,” said father Alfredo Berardi.

A doctor at the Hamilton Children’s Hospital determined that Julia had a metabolic disorder that affects one in 70,000 children. Julia couldn’t metabolize protein because of the rare genetic condition called urea cycle disorder. The disorder causes the highly toxic substance ammonia to build up in the blood and threatens brain damage, coma and death.

Excerpts from the article:

Canadian researchers are opening the door on what could be a new approach in rehabilitating patients unable to walk safely on their own due to Parkinson’s disease.

It is estimated that up to 50 per cent of Parkinson’s patients lose the ability to walk normally because of the disease. Many abruptly stop mid-step, triggering the risk of falls. Others have slow and awkward gaits. Because there is no existing treatment for the condition, many of those patients become wheelchair-bound or bedridden.

Gail Jardine’s condition hadn’t progressed that far, but she knows the problem well. Parkinson’s left the 66-year-old Kitchener, Ont., resident unable to walk steadily without assistance. Several times a day, she would experience what she describes as “freezing” – a sudden inability to move her feet while walking.

Sri Lanka's president has asked for the resignations of the defence secretary and national police chief, a dramatic internal shake-up after security forces shrugged off intelligence reports warning of possible attacks before Easter bombings that killed over 350 people, the president's office said Wednesday.

It wasn't immediately clear who would be replacing them, but President Maithripala Sirisena said during a televised speech Tuesday that he planned to change the head of the defence forces within 24 hours.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which struck Christians worshipping in three churches and people at three luxury hotels. Authorities remain unsure of its involvement, though many suspect experienced foreign militants were advising, funding or guiding the attackers.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to "go to war" with Canada if the country doesn't take back tons of trash a Canada-based company had shipped to Manila several years ago.

"I'll give a warning to Canada maybe next week that they better pull that (trash) out," he said Tuesday, according to CNN Philippines. "We'll declare war against them, we can handle them anyway."

According to CNN Philippines, 103 containers holding 2,450 tons of trash were shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014.

The containers were labeled as plastics for recycling, but inspectors in Philippines found the garbage was not recyclable. The trash was declared illegal as the private Canada-based company responsible for shipping the cargo didn't have import clearances.

Some of the containers are still at the port of Manila, according to the report.

Domestic terror suspect Christopher Hasson, who is accused of planning a terror attack on politicians and media figures, also allegedly searched the internet for the home addresses of two Supreme Court justices as well as the best gun to kill African-Americans, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

Hasson pleaded not guilty in federal court last month to to weapon and drug charges that prosecutors say were connected to a plot to murder Democratic and media figures. Prosecutors said he wanted to conduct a mass killing and described his white supremacist views in previous court documents.

The new documents reveal that Hasson conducted an internet search for "are Supreme Court justices protected" about two weeks before searching for the home addresses of the two unnamed justices.

Prosecutors also allege in the court filing that Hasson's "internet search history lays bare his views on race."

According to the court filing, Hasson searched for the "best" gun with which to kill African-Americans, "after which he visited various firearm sales websites."
They say in August 2017 he searched for "white homeland" and "when are whites going to wake up." A few months later, he allegedly searched for "please god let there be a race war."

Elections Canada has sent a new edict to online platforms like Facebook and Google to inform them of the need to abide by new political advertising rules, and is warning that not complying could result in thousands of dollars in fines or charges.

The guidance also explicitly states that even if these companies don’t plan on allowing political ads on their platforms, they still have an obligation under the law to make sure that their sites uphold the new requirements.

“Some platforms may decide not to sell regulated ads rather than create a registry. However, in such situations, steps must still be taken to ensure that no regulated advertising appears on the platform. If regulated ads appear without being included in a registry, an investigation and even prosecution could take place, depending on the circumstances,” says Elections Canada.

Immigrant-owned firms create more net jobs and have higher growth than businesses with owners born in Canada, according to newly-released research.

The decade-long research, released Wednesday by Statistics Canada, distinguishes between firms owned by immigrants who entered Canada since 1980 and businesses with Canadian-born owners.

During the period of the study, 2003 to 2013, companies owned by immigrant entrepreneurs accounted for a quarter of all net new jobs created in the private sector, while representing just 17 per cent of firms.

New research from UNICEF has revealed the alarming number of Canadian children who have not received the measles vaccine.

According to the report, 287,000 Canadian children born between 2010 and 2017 went unvaccinated for measles, the seventh-highest among high-income countries. The United States tops the list with nearly 2.6 million unvaccinated children during the same time period, followed by France (608,000), the U.K. (527,000), Argentina (430,000), Italy (435,000) and Japan (374,000).

“The ground for the global measles outbreaks we are witnessing today was laid years ago,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a news release. “The measles virus will always find unvaccinated children. If we are serious about averting the spread of this dangerous but preventable disease, we need to vaccinate every child, in rich and poor countries alike.”

The election of a Progressive Conservative government in Prince Edward Island doesn’t mean the federal government will face another vocal opponent hell-bent on stopping its carbon-pricing plan.

“I don’t see us joining a fight right now to fight the carbon tax,” premier-designate Dennis King said Wednesday on CTV’s Power Play.

Provincial opposition to the federal carbon scheme has grown substantially as new conservative premiers have come to power over the past year-plus.

I don't like the phrase "right now". However, let's hope King understands the impact of climate change on his province, the country and the World. There's hope for you Conservatives yet.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry told Forests Ontario the day after the Progressive Conservative government delivered its budget this month that the 50 Million Tree Program was being eliminated.

Rob Keen, CEO of Forests Ontario, said since 2008 more than 27 million trees have been planted across Ontario through the program, which saved landowners up to 90 per cent of the costs of large-scale tree planting.

The father of two of the suspected Easter suicide bombers was arrested Thursday on suspicion of aiding his sons, according to Sri Lanka's former navy chief, as businesses and religious leaders worried about a new attack four days after blasts killed more than 350 people.

Across Colombo and in Negombo, the seaside city north of the capital where a bombing killed 110 people, residents and office workers stayed indoors and closed up shops, leaving both cities unusually quiet.

Former navy chief Jayanath Colombage, now a counterterrorism expert, confirmed the arrest of the father of two of the suspected bombers to The Associated Press. He said it was unclear whether the father or his home, where an explosion Sunday killed three police officers, had been under surveillance ahead of the attacks.

Hate crimes appear to be on the rise in Alberta with the province becoming home to a number of extremist movements, according to a draft report obtained by CTV News.

The federally funded 92-page report from the Organization for the Prevention of Violence examines six types of extremist groups currently active in Alberta, ranging from white nationalists to left-wing extremists. It found up to 40 people from Alberta have joined armed forces overseas, such as ISIS and al Qaeda, since 2012, a high per-capita number considering the province’s population of 4.3 million.

Right-wing militia groups, on the other hand, spiked to as many as 500 members in 2018, which the report concluded was a reaction to the elections of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Alberta NDP Premier Rachel Notley, combined with the economic downturn in the province.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un even managed to match Russian President Vladimir Putin's manspreading -- the two sat with knees spread wide apart as they chatted before the start of their first summit, which began Thursday in the Far East port city of Vladivostok.

With so little else to go on, it's a common practice for North Korea watchers to pay extremely close attention to Kim's every word and gesture when he makes public appearances. Summits are no exception, and there's always lots of analytical commentary, insightful and silly.

A damning report on a major leak of Facebook users’ personal data has shed new light on the number of Canadians impacted and what kind of information was harvested from them.

The report was the result of a joint investigation launched a year ago by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia. The probe was prompted by concerns that Facebook had broken Canadian privacy laws after it was revealed that the social media giant disclosed users’ personal information to a third-party app called “This is Your Digital Life” (TYDL) that was later used to deliver targeted political messaging by Cambridge Analytica.

Between November 2013 and December 2015 the app was active and “encouraged its users to complete a personality quiz, the responses to which were analysed along with information Facebook disclosed to the TYDL App.”

An environmental organization based in Vancouver says one million recyclable bottles and cans "go missing" every day in British Columbia and it's calling for higher deposits to discourage consumers from littering or throwing them away.

Chloe Dubois, of the Ocean Legacy Foundation, says her organization analysed data from the Brewers Recycled Container Collection Council and Encorp Pacific, the corporation in charge of container management, to compare bottles and cans sold with the number that are returned.

The foundation says about 387 million beverage containers, including items like plastic drink bottles and beer cans, didn't make it back into the province's regulated deposit refund system in 2017.

Excerpts from the article:

An Ontario university has condemned an incident on its campus during which a woman told a group of young Muslim Canadian women that their hijabs and long black clothing didn’t make them “look Canadian.”

In footage posted to Facebook, a white woman in a pink puffer jacket describes what she says is a standard look for young Canadian females: “the ripped jeans, the little jean jacket and the running shoes. And they don’t wear scarves and they don’t wear black.”

The group of six Muslim friends were standing outside the Wilfrid Laurier University library in Waterloo, Ont., when the woman in the video stopped to stare at them “like zoo animals,” wrote Shama Saleh in a Facebook post.

Hey! Who the fuck gave you the right to tell others what is appropriate "Canadian" attire? FUCK OFF!

Excerpts from the article:

The driver accused of intentionally hitting a group of pedestrians in Northern California attacked people he believed were of the Muslim faith, police said.

New evidence shows that Isaiah Joel Peoples also targeted the crowd based on race, Sunnyvale, California, Police Chief Phan Ngo told reporters Friday. Ngo refused to discuss the evidence or provide more details about the investigation.

Peoples, 34, has been charged with eight counts of attempted murder for allegedly driving his vehicle into pedestrians in Sunnyvale earlier this week. If convicted, Peoples faces up to life in prison.

Excerpts from the article:

As a small boat packed with Venezuelans capsized in Caribbean coastal waters this week, Yubreilys Merchan found herself with seconds to react.

In a desperate bid to survive, the 23-year-old hairdresser stripped off her clothes to lighten her weight before plunging into the water amid cries of panic. Then, she began swimming toward a nearby island, a skill she learned from her mother as a child.

When she and another companion finally reached a rocky coast in the middle of the night, they clambered over boulders and collapsed in an embrace, crying with relief after realizing they were safe.

Excerpts from the article:

A British Columbia businessman and philanthropist is suing Twitter for publishing what he calls "false and defamatory" tweets that escalated during the 2016 United States election.

Frank Giustra is the founder of Lionsgate Entertainment and CEO of the Fiore Group of Companies, as well as a member of the board of trustees of the Clinton Foundation.

He says in a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court that he faced a targeted attack on Twitter by a group who set out to vilify him for political purposes starting around February 2015.

Excerpts from the article:

Tutankhamun, the boy king of ancient Egypt, came to power only after two of his sisters jointly held the throne, according to an Egyptologist at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM).

Researchers have known for more than half a century that a queen had reigned before Tutankhamun, whose intact tomb was discovered in 1922, sparking global interest in Egyptology.

Some thought she was Nefertiti, the sister and wife of Akhenaten, who proclaimed herself "king" following his death. Others believed it to be the eldest daughter Princess Meritaten.

Excerpts from the article:

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's whirlwind visit to Ottawa this weekend offers the Liberal government a rare chance to trumpet a strong international alliance in the face of unyielding strain with its two top trading partners.

Canada finds itself between a rock and a hard place with the United States and China: the FM45 administration is holding firm on punitive metal tariffs while the People's Republic's ongoing imprisonment of two Canadian men following the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Vancouver has thwarted the Trudeau government's Asian trade ambitions.

Abe and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will celebrate their successful launch of the rebooted Trans-Pacific Partnership late last year -- the 11-country Pacific Rim trade alliance that was rescued after FM45 withdrew the U.S. from it in January 2017, nearly killing it.

Excerpts from the article:

The 59-second video shows eight men clasping hands and pledging allegiance to the "Emir of the Believers" and the "Caliphate of the Muslims." They were about to launch a series of devastating attacks in Sri Lanka, an atrocity that took the lives of more than 250 people and simultaneously declared that ISIS is far from extinguished as a global threat.

Within days of the attacks, ISIS' online publication al Nabaa crowed about "raising the Caliphate banner in new arenas... The days are pregnant with more disappointments for the enemies of Allah." The video was released by a news agency linked to ISIS.

There is much yet to be learned about the organization behind the Sri Lankan attacks, but counterterrorism experts are united on one point: the small Islamist groups on the island could not have carried out such a complex attack without outside help.
