Excerpts from the article:

New Democrat MP Charlie Angus says the failure of the federal government to properly address water quality concerns in Far North Indigenous communities amounts “institutionalized apartheid.”

Angus visited Attawapiskat First Nation in his northern Ontario riding last week after it declared a state of emergency over high levels of the disinfectant chemical byproducts trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) in its tap water.

The tap water has been undrinkable for about a decade. Local people are now being warned to avoid long showers, cut back on washing dishes, and not to boil water which could emit harmful chemicals into the air.

Justin, I'm sorry to say that only you and Liberals can do something to help out our First Nation folks. I can guaran-damn-tee that you will not receive any help from Fraud and the PCs.

Excerpts from the article:

An American man was sentenced to 20 months behind bars for his role in an elaborate telemarketing scheme that ripped off more than 1,000 timeshare owners, including dozens of Canadians.

Approximately 58 Canadians were defrauded an estimated US$21,710 in the decade-long scheme, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada told CTVNews.ca. The victims came from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Quebec.

Michael Kroger, 60, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud in the scheme. In total, he defrauded victims out of more than US$780,000. A judge said Kroger showed no remorse for his role in the crimes and ordered him to pay more than US$212,000 in restitution.

Excerpts from the article:

A daredevil French inventor Thursday crashed into the sea on an attempt to fly across the Channel standing on a jet-powered "flyboard", wrecking for now his dream of becoming a new aviation pioneer.

Franky Zapata, 40, a former jet-skiing champion, had to be fished out of the Channel by rescuers after falling into the clogged shipping lane between France and Britain during a tricky refuelling manouevre.

But he was in good health and would soon try again, his entourage said.

A normally quiet and safe northern Manitoba town has been on edge as the manhunt for two teenagers wanted in connection to three deaths in British Columbia has descended on the community.

Gillam, Man., a community of 1,265 people more than 1,000 kilometres north of Winnipeg, is one of the last towns before the northbound highway ends. The community has been on a near-lockdown since police found the burned-out Toyota Rav 4 that Bryer Schmegelsky, Kam McLeod had used earlier this week to cross the prairies.

Remember when that Covington asshole sued Washington Post? I remember gleeful tweets like this?:

So how did that turn out?

I am really hoping that his attorneys weren't taking this case pro bono. I am not usually on the side of attorneys who push nonsense cases forward like this, but I hope those attorneys turned the Sandmann family upside down and emptied all of their pockets. My distaste for bloodsucking attorneys is surpassed by my disgust of greedy people who try to abusively extract money from news sources that are making a good faith effort to report the truth.

That Nick guy should seriously consider changing his name. His stupid, smug face with that awful red hat is burned into the memories of good people who watched evil descend on this country. He's young enough to learn from his mistakes. I hope he eventually makes the decision to recognize how the terrible influence of his stupid parents and fellow students poisoned his thoughts, and makes a decision to be better than they are.

Three southern resident killer whales have been declared dead by the Center for Whale Research, bringing the population down to 73.

The dead killer whales are a 42-year-old matriarch known as J17, a 28-year-old adult called K25, and a 29-year-old male called L84, the institute posted on its website.

"These whales are from the extremely endangered southern resident killer whale population, that historically frequent the Salish Sea almost daily in summer months," it said.

Canadian research that led to the discovery of a specific gene mutation -- Neurotrophic Tyrosine Receptor Kinase or NTRK gene fusion -- has allowed a first-of-its kind cancer treatment to be created by pharmaceutical company Bayer and approved for use by Health Canada.

A gene mutation is the result of a mistake or alteration in a normal DNA sequence or gene structure that can cause myriad of health problems.

“NTRK gene fusion is a mutation that occurs when a ‘break’ happens in DNA and the NTRK gene is relocated to another part of the DNA molecule, finding itself ‘fused’ to another gene that would not normally be beside it,” said Dr. David Malkin, an oncologist at Toronto’s SickKids hospital, in an email to CTV News.ca Tuesday.

Amnesty International, a global human rights organization, issued a travel advisory for the U.S. Wednesday in the wake of two mass shootings where dozens of people were killed, urging people to exercise caution.

“Depending on the traveler’s gender identity, race, country of origin, ethnic background or sexual orientation, they may be at higher risk of being targeted with gun violence and should plan accordingly,” the advisory says.

The advisory states that people should be “extra vigilant at all times” and “avoid places where large numbers of people gather” listing events, houses of worship, schools, malls, local bars, nightclubs and casinos.

The remains of a super-sized parrot that stood more than half the height of an average human and roamed the earth 19 million years ago have been discovered in New Zealand.

Judging by the size of the leg bones, the bird would have stood about one metre (39 inches) tall and weighed up to seven kilograms (15.5 pounds), according to a report by an international team of palaeontologists published in the latest edition of Biology Letters.

"It could have flown but we're putting our money on it being flightless," Paul Scofield, the senior curator of natural history at Canterbury Museum, told AFP Wednesday.

What is believed to be an early drinking hall where influential Vikings may have raised a flagon of ale has been unearthed on a Scottish island.

The large Norse building was discovered by a team of students and residents with the University of the Highlands and Islands Archeology Institute during a dig last week at Skaill Farmstead in Westness on the island of Rousay in the Orkney archipelago, which is located off the northeastern coast of Scotland.

The structure was excavated beneath a more recent farmstead at Skaill as part of a years-long archeological project looking into the history of a farm complex there.

Zookeepers in Calgary have rescued an unhatched penguin chick after patching its badly damaged shell with pieces of another egg.

The Calgary Zoo says in a news release that animal care staff noticed fragments of the king penguin's shell inside the beach area of the birds' habitat over the August long weekend.

The chick wasn't expected to hatch for about another week, so the veterinary team patched the porous shell with a piece of shell from a Humboldt penguin egg from years before, and the egg was placed in an electronic egg incubator.

That is amazing news!

The federal government will spend $26 million this year on Ontario refugee and immigration legal aid services after the province cut funding, the prime minister announced Monday, while taking partisan pre-election digs at the premier.

Premier Doug Ford's spring budget slashed Legal Aid Ontario's budget by 30 per cent, including eliminating funding for refugee and immigration law services. His Progressive Conservative government maintained that Ottawa should pay those costs because immigration is a federal responsibility.

The Liberals now have a candidate in the British Columbia riding of Vancouver Granville, where their biggest rival will be someone they once called their own.

Taleeb Noormohamed, a 42-year-old tech entrepreneur, has been acclaimed as the Liberal vying to unseat Jody Wilson-Raybould, the former justice minister now seeking re-election as an Independent candidate.

Wilson-Raybould, who won the seat for the Liberals as a star candidate with about 44 per cent of the vote in 2015, rocked the Trudeau government earlier this year with allegations that she had been improperly pressured to end a criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin.

This election, coming up in October, will be a doozy! JT and the Liberals better be careful! Jody could be Justin's achilles heel!

Excerpts from the article:

A political bombshell was dropped Wednesday when the ethics commissioner found Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had contravened the Conflict of Interest Act for trying to influence then-justice minister Jody-Wilson-Raybould in "many ways" during the SNC-Lavalin scandal.

As the news broke many Canadians were surprised to learn that despite the contravention, there would be no punishment.

That’s because Canada's Conflict of Interest Act "does not provide for any sanctions for breaches found following an examination by the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner."

When Jeff Dornan opened a brewery six years ago, he knew the brewing process would produce hundreds of kilograms of spent grain, and he had a plan for it.

Rather than pay to dump it in a landfill, he partnered with a farmer to haul it away and feed it to his animals.

Not every craft brewer can access farmers in need of feed, so an industry has formed around spent grain with entrepreneurs turning it into cookies, breads and even dog treats.

Iceland on Sunday honours the passing of Okjokull, its first glacier lost to climate change, as scientists warn that some 400 others on the subarctic island risk the same fate.

A bronze plaque will be unveiled in a ceremony starting around 1400 GMT to mark Okjokull -- which translates to "Ok glacier" -- in the west of Iceland, in the presence of local researchers and their peers at Rice University in the United States, who initiated the project.

Iceland's Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, Environment Minister Gudmundur Ingi Gudbrandsson, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson are also due to attend the event.

A customer shot a waiter dead at an eatery on the outskirts of Paris, apparently enraged at being made to wait for a sandwich, a source close to the investigation said Saturday.

The waiter's colleagues called police after he was shot in the shoulder with a handgun in the Noisy-le-Grand suburb east of Paris on Friday night, the source said.

Attempts to revive the 28-year-old failed and he died at the scene.

The gunman, who a witness said lost his temper "as his sandwich wasn't prepared quickly enough", fled the scene.

Police told AFP a murder investigation has been opened.

With the shooter still on the run Saturday, shocked residents gathered outside the pizza and sandwich eatery.

"He was killed for a sandwich?" one asked, unbelievingly.

It is sad," said a 29-year-old woman. "It's a quiet restaurant, without any problems. It just opened a few months ago."

But others noted high crime levels in the area, notably drug-dealing and public drunkenness.

Ontario will move ahead with its controversial municipal funding cuts for public health and child care next year.

Fraud is expected to make the announcement later today at a gathering of municipal leaders in Ottawa.

His office says Fraud will announce that the funding changes will go ahead on Jan. 1, 2020.

The Progressive Conservative government tried to force retroactive funding cuts this year but had to cancel them after municipal leaders complained their annual budgets had already passed.

The new plan will see all municipalities -- including Toronto -- pay 30 per cent of the public health care costs. Under the initial plan, Toronto would be on the hook for 50 per cent of the cost.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2020, municipalities will also have to pay 20 per cent of the cost of creating new child care spaces, which the province previously fully funded.

Fraud is also expected to announce changes to land ambulance funding at the Ottawa gathering.

The Tory government has said the funding cuts are necessary in order to tackle the province's $11.7-billion deficit.

Excerpts from the article:

A pre-election chill has descended over some environment charities after Elections Canada warned them that discussing the dangers of climate change during the upcoming federal campaign could be deemed partisan activity.

An Elections Canada official warned groups in a training session earlier this summer that because Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People's Party of Canada, has expressed doubts about the legitimacy of climate change, any group that promotes it as real or an emergency could be considered partisan, said Tim Gray, executive director of the advocacy group Environmental Defence.

Any partisan activity -- including advertising, surveys, or any kind of campaign costing at least $500 -- would require a charity to register as a third party for the election, an onerous requirement that could jeopardize a group's charitable tax status, Gray said.

It’s Pride week in the nation’s capital and the city’s mayor has one thing to say to Canadians:

“It doesn’t matter who you love. It’s your life. Live it as you should.”

As simple as it sounds, it’s a message Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said he wishes he heard when he was a teenager growing up in the 1970s and struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. Perhaps it would have encouraged him not to wait nearly four decades to come out as gay.

A second planet has been discovered circling Beta Pictoris, a fledgling star in our own galaxy offering astronomers a rare glimpse of a planetary system in the making, according to a study published Monday.

"We talking about a giant planet about 3,000 times more massive than Earth, situated 2.7 times further from its star than the Earth is from the Sun," said Anne-Marie Lagrange, an astronomer at France's National Centre for Scientific Research and lead author of a study in Nature Astronomy.

The new planet, b Pictoris c, completes its orbit roughly every 1,200 days. Like its big sister b Pictoris b, discovered by Lagrange and her team in 2009, it is a gassy giant.

Ontario students will be taught about sexual orientation beginning in Grade 5, one year sooner than before, but won't learn about gender identity and LGBTQ issues until Grade 8 as part of the new provincial sex-ed curriculum unveiled on Wednesday.

The Doug Fraud government released its updated teaching platform after overhauling the previous Liberal plan and consulting parents about age-appropriateness for various sexual health discussions.

The sex-ed curriculum comes after an interim teaching plan based on 1998 materials was put in place after the 2015 curriculum from the previous Liberal government was repealed.

A group of health, labour, and environmental organizations is calling on Canada’s leading grocery stores to ditch paper receipts coated with hormone-disrupting chemicals that have been linked to diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Environmental Defence Canada (EDC), Breast Cancer Action Quebec, Mind the Store, and the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada union urged the country’s “leading grocery giants” to stop using receipt paper containing bisphenol-A (BPA) or bisphenol-S (BPS).

Grocers specifically named in the release include Loblaws, Costco Canada, Metro, Sobeys, and Walmart Canada. The group states that grocery store cashiers are subjected to “potentially dangerous levels” of the chemicals through skin absorption when they handle receipts without wearing gloves.
