I just finished the first two episodes. I'll agree with the Chicago Tribune article that it recalls "300" on a cable budget and there's enough nudity and sex to rival HBO's "Rome" and undoubtedly, the scenes in the colosseum will draw comparisons to "Gladiator"...but I'd say that by the end of pilot, you'll at least want to see the second episode. By the second episode, you'll find that this show has found its own voice and you'll be sucked in enough to forget everything you initially thought about this series throughout the first 35-40 minutes of the first episode.
And I won't spoil exactly when you finally get to see Lucy Lawless in the buff but yeah...you definitely do.

I'm glad I read this. Currently watching the first episode this very minute, and I'm decidedly underwhelmed so far. I'd trade the 300 wannabe visuals for Rome's realism any day.

Yeah, CJ nailed that description of the first episode. I lost track of how many times I wanted to give up. But that final scene is stellar enough to bring me back for episode 2.

No you're not. It's a fabulous show! Death and sex were so close to the surface in Ancient Rome that it's difficult to handle sometimes. This isn't because it's disgusting, just the opposite. It's incredibly exciting! OK their attitude toward death is disgusting, but their attitude toward sex is just amazing. I mean people fucking on the street at any time!
Respectable whores, people not having to worry about dating! Either sex could just grab a slave off the street and fuck him or her then and there.
It's a terrible shame that Andy is ill. He's doing a great job. I've met both the Exec producer Rob Tapert, and Lucy Lawless. They're wonderful, extraordinarily talented people and wish them all well.
It looks like Andy will be OK. I hope he will be home with his kids soon.

I am sooooooo sad right now.
Anyone that watched last night's episode, [link inactive:404 - Page not found]"Party Favors", knows what I'm talking about. They killed off one of my favorite characters in the most ruthless, fucked-up way possible. It was SO wrong.
My whole day is thrown off now.

Exactly! Every week you wonder, "What will happen this week or next week? How on Earth can they possibly top the previous episode?" and then they fuckin' do it. It's amazing. And yes, just when you think that things can't get any worse, that there are no more surprises to be had, that Spartacus can't possibly sink any lower, that they can't unexpectedly kill off anyone else...they fuckin' do that, too. No one is safe, apparently.
It's high praise, I know but seriously, this might possibly be the single best and most consistently entertaining first season of ANY show I've EVER watched. If you made a graph that represented each episode's quality level, it might start off somewhere around 60-65% for the first 2/3rds of the pilot but by the conclusion of that, it'd spike to 110% and level off right there for every episode thereafter! It's crazy. Week after week, I think there's no way they can have any more tricks up their sleeve and they up and break the rules (and this week, my heart) again. Pure insanity.

One of the fascinating things about the show, (besides all the incredible women! NAKED!) is learning how brutal Roman society was at all levels. It's like betrayal is everyone's middle name! The entire society functions on both physical and emotional abuse. What is the sense of all that wealth and power when everyone is so bitterly unhappy? The Romans believed that in life, it's a lot better to fuck than to be fucked. That should almost be the name of the series!
Take Illythia. Her husband, Glabber, is a total asshole, and all of her "friends" treat her like absolute shit. Is it any wonder that she cracked and killed that poor woman? Then she goes out and sexually abuses a 15 year old (I don't CARE if he was called a man!) to get him to set up Sparty to kill his best friend in the Ludus.
Now on to the fun. What women do you guys love the best? I've been a Lucy Lawless fan since 1995. I've met her 3 times. She is such a wonderful, down-to-earth woman. She's also fucking GORGEOUS! Seeing her naked is a real treat! What beautiful tits! Smallish but with huge aureolae and nipples! She's also very big. 5'11" and about 160 pounds.

^ Word!
My attraction to the series isn't based on the sex or the violence but the way the two seamlessly intertwine with these immensely entertaining plot twists. The one thing this show does VERY well is leaving you a very satisfactory conclusion at episode's end but also highly anticipating the next installment. They never leave you hanging or set up a huge event and not pay it off. Every episodes is self-contained, more or less but also ends in a way that you're even more invested in these characters' futures than before.
I love ALL the women on the show but if I had to rank them:
At the top of my personal list would be the newest cast member, , who plays slave girl Mira. Lucretia sent her to Spartacus last week in an effort to prep him for his night with who would turn out to be Ilithya.
Behind her would be , who is Lucretia's personal slave, Naevia. She and Crixus also happen to be in love. I'm surprised it took us until this week's episode to see her in a proper love scene.
, of course is a natural for third (and yes, her tits are so magnificent it's practically DISTRACTING whenever they're onscreen). And whose breasts look any more awesome than Viva Bianca's (Ilithyia), even when she's clothed. I really wish we got to see more of Spartacus' (now dear departed) wife, Sura ([link inactive:404 - Page not found]Erin Cummings) because she was fuckin' beautiful as well. If she were a regular cast member, I'd have probably ranked her second behind Katrina Law, if not FIRST.

Yes one can learn something. The two recent cable series on Ancient Rome, ROME and Spartacus Blood and Sand, both employed PhD classical historians to keep things accurate.
I'm a historian too, and I've read a lot of Suetonius, Plutarch, and the great novelist Robert Graves. (I Claudius) Both of the shows are really quite accurate about Roman social morays.
As for the girls, Katrina Law is very, VERY hot. I'm sure that there will be more coming.

Well, my attraction is certainly based on that combination. That's why I like eighties japanese Anime, and that's why I like this show.
Of course the setting (ancient Rome) is a big part of the attraction. But I'm not taking it too seriously...

This was run in the Chicago Tribune today. There WILL be a 6 ep prequel to Sparticus Blood and Sand. Herewith the story:
"'Spartacus' to return with prequel series, Whitfield 'responding well' to treatment"
chicagotribune.com
in its entirety below
>"Spartacus" will return to Starz in January, but as a 6-part prequel series that will once again star John Hannah and Lucy Lawless, the network said Tuesday.
The prequel series will focus on the rise of the gladiator school or "ludus" known as the House of Batiatus, and production gets underway this summer in New Zealand. John Hannah will return as Batiatus and Lucy Lawless will return as his wife, Lucretia; their story will be the focus of the prequel season.
Star Andy Whitfield, who is currently undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma, will return "briefly" in two of the six episodes. According to Starz, Whitfield is "responding well" to treatments.
"The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of `Spartacus,' giving audiences the engaging experience they've come to expect," Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. "Fortunately, Andy is responding to his treatments, and will be able to be part of this prequel in a limited capacity. As soon as he's able, we look forward to continuing the Spartacus story."
Other returning actors include Peter Mensah as Doctore, Manu Bennett as Crixus, Antonio Te Maioha as Barca, Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur and Lesley-Ann Brandt as Naevia.
There will also be a new character who is yet to be cast -- House of Batiatus' top gladiator before Spartacus came along. Other new characters "will help fill in the story about the people and politics in the House of Batiatus and ancient Capua as a whole," according to Starz, which saw "Spartacus" grow into a hit for the network over the course of its first season.
My previous coverage of this enthralling gladiator show is here; my post on the Season 1's insanely entertaining and surprising finale is here.
A press release from Starz is below.
PRODUCTION ON STARZ' `SPARTACUS'
SIX-PART PREQUEL TO BEGIN THIS SUMMER
Andy Whitfield to Appear In Two Episodes Along With Lucy Lawless,
John Hannah, Peter Mensah Plus Other Returning and New Characters
Los Angeles, Calif. – May 11, 2010 – Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz' hit original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."
Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the series, will appear in the prequel briefly, but Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave. With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.
John Hannah returns as Batiatus, owner of the Ludus, along with his wife Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless.

Other returning actors include Peter Mensah (Doctore), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha
(Barca), Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur), Lesley-Ann Brandt
(Naevia) – and others. New characters will also be
added – most notably the gladiator who was champion of the House of Batiatus before Spartacus or even Crixus – who will help fill in the story about the people and politics in the House of Batiatus and ancient Capua as a whole.
Production on the second season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was postponed this spring to allow Andy Whitfield to be treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in New Zealand. His doctors indicate that the actor is responding well.
"The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of `Spartacus,' giving audiences the engaging experience they've come to expect," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Fortunately, Andy is responding to his treatments, and will be able to be part of this prequel in a limited capacity. As soon as he's able, we look forward to continuing the Spartacus story."
Produced by Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen and Steven S. DeKnight, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was the highest rated show for the 18-49 demographic among all cable networks for 12 of the 13 Fridays on which it aired based on coverage rating.* The production team remains intact for the six-part prequel.

It'll be interesting to see who the Champion of Capua was before Crixus but it's a shame that all of this takes place before Spartacus arrives at the ludus. Not because of the lack of Spartacus but because of all the returning characters we're going to get (like Barca), that means I doubt we'll see Varro who arrived at the House of Batiatus at the same time as Spartacus.

I gather that Andy Whitfield is dealing with cancer. I assume the this "prequel" has to do with his absence. Is there any word regarding his health?

The cancer is in remission. I have heard through the Lucy Lawless fan grapevine that the doctors are very optimistic about a cure since the non Hodgskins lymphoma was caught extremely early.
Filming for the second full season of Sparticus, Blood and Sand will begin sometime in January, and Andy will be there.

Have you read a single post in this thread, Clam Digger?
It says right in the article that I linked:
And yes, this 6-episode prequel was in direct response to Whitfield suddenly being diagnosed with the illness (which I posted about back in March). The first season of this show was immensely popular and I doubt Starz! wanted to let that die down just because their star has cancer. There was money to be made, dammit! So prequel it was until they could get him back on his feet (hopefully). The good news, at least, is that Whitfield IS okay, we get a prequel AND a second season. It all worked out in the end.

Oh, man. I don't like the sound of "aggressive treatment." Hopefully it just means that he's going to lose too much muscle mass to be in a TV show where he's supposed to walk around almost naked.

No it's really bad news. Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma is one of the most aggressive and dangerous cancers there is. There's a really good chance that Andy won't make it at all.

It really depends almost entirely on what type of NHL he has. Given his age and gender I would guess Burkitt lymphoma, which is curable about half the time. My second guess, again based on age and gender, would be Precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma - although most of the time that is described as a leukemia rather than as NHL. The prognosis on that is fairly positive, especially if it has not spread to the bone marrow.
Really, without more information, it can't be said whether his situation is dire or not. Obviously, it is never good to have any cancer, even if it is highly curable, but not all cancers are created equal and NHL is a hugely broad category of cancers that range from almost entirely curable to barely treatable.
I hope he makes it.
