"BOTH Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have made weight ahead of their blockbuster showdown at UFC 229, squashing fears the event could be a blowout with the Russian’s history of failing to cut weight in time.
Khabib registered a flat 155lb, while a particularly lean McGregor came in lighter at 154.5lb."
Renowned MMA journalist Ariel Helwani said [...]
“The amount of weight these men and women cut ... if this truly got out to the mainstream world, you’d be flabbergasted at what they do before stepping into the cage,” Helwani said at the weigh-in. “It’s shocking what they go through.”"

Yeah, I wrestled in the early 70's in high school. We would use rubber suits and hot rooms to sweat out "water weight". We would weigh in before the tounament started, so just a couple of hours before our match, depending on your weight class. The coach would then give us salt pills, orange juice, fruit, jello. We would compete several pounds heavier. These guys are weighing in the day before, so they can eat full meals, and they go through more extremes before weigh in, probably competing at least 10 lbs. over weight.
edit to add, Same thing goes on in boxing.

^ Boxers used to weigh in on the morning of the bout. But it was determined this was too dangerous.
Recently a young local female fighter died when trying to make weight for a bout. Trying to lose water weight, she employed the regular methods males use. An expert advised that women's bodies hold on to water much more tightly than male bodies.
I'll find a link if anyone's interested in this sad story

^ Yes, I would like to see that sad story, just for info. The thing about when i was wrestling in the early 70's is that we were early teens being taught to go through this. I was on varsity as a freshman, 13 years old. Who was I to question the coach? And to my understanding this has changed alot, but it may be mostly up to the parents. My nephew is a highly ranked high school wrestler. My brother, his father, who was captain of the high school team won't let him do weight cutting. But as adults and professionals, they can make their own choice.

^ "said her daughter was instructed by people in her boxing gym to dehydrate her body to lose weight.
"She was given a program that was called 'water loading'," Ms Lindsay said. That is a weight-cutting technique where fighters increase their water intake before dramatically restricting consumption days or hours before competition.
"She followed it to a tee and didn't make it to the weigh-in that day," Ms Lindsay said"
"said her daughter would never have practised weight cutting if she knew of the dangers. "She thought that weight cutting is what happens, it was absolutely normal and that's what everyone in our gym did," she said."
(/>"According to MMA nutritionist ... women are subjected with an even tougher battle when it comes to shredding before the weigh-in. Women generally can’t cut weight like men can, mainly because of their higher oestrogen levels.
“The female body doesn’t have the same amount of muscle mass and ability to pull water,”
If you stick a pretty lean man and woman into a sauna or hot tub, that man will lose significantly more weight in the same amount of time.”"

UFC 229 was absolutely disgusting. Nurmagomedov should be:
- disqualified
- stripped of his belt
- suspended for 12mths
- criminally charged.
(meaning if convicted, could be barred from competing in the US.)
"two members of the Russian’s team attacked McGregor. As one confronted him head-on and threw a punch, another leapt into the cage and sucker-punched him from behind"
"Nurmagomedov ... stepping away from a prone McGregor and immediately pointing at the Irishman’s corner, shouting and throwing his mouthpiece.
The men in McGregor’s corner appeared to respond with taunts, and Nurmagomedov climbed over the fence and fought with
... [one].
While McGregor watched, two men entered the cage and sucker-punched him"

^ A sad thing is, the whole card was amazing. The highlight for me was the Derrick Lewis - Alexander Volkov bout. Volkov was easily winning every round. Then about 15 secs from the end of the bout, Lewis got him with a knockout right. He was laying into Volkov while he was down and the ref had to stop it; 10 secs from the end.
Tony Ferguson - in his comeback from knee surgery bout - and Anthony Pettis was also great.
With the headline bout, McGregor actually had chances to strike, but couldn't.
Michelle Waterson (US) defeated (9) Felice Herrig (US) via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 29-28)
(2) Derrick Lewis (US) defeated (5) Alexander Volkov (Russia) via KO (punches) — R3, 4:49
(12) Dominick Reyes (US) defeated (7) Ovince St Preux (US) via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Tony Ferguson (US) defeats (8) Anthony Pettis (US) via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) — R2, 5:00
Khabib Nurmagomedov (Russia) defeated (1) Conor McGregor (Ireland) via submission (rear naked choke) — R4, 3:03

^^ To stop both fighters jumping out and attacking people outside, and people jumping in and attacking the fighters, maybe they should put barbed wire along the top of the octagon.

I think this was showed up with bout. McGregor looked way underdone.
The UFC has really dug a hole for itself in not taking any action against McGregor for his throwing of a trolley at a bus window full of of UFC fighters in Brooklyn. But I still believe they should suspend Nurmagomedov.
"McGregor’s fame attracted attention to UFC 229 from millions of people who don’t watch MMA regularly, and the embarrassing post-fight events fit neatly into many casual stereotypes of the sport as a barbaric, exploitative spectacle."
"Although White said he was “disgusted” by McGregor’s behaviour in Brooklyn, the UFC promoted this bout using video footage of McGregor’s violent attack, which traumatised strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and left two other fighters unable to compete due to injuries from the shattered glass."

"the biggest fight in the history of UFC became that only after McGregor launched a criminal attack on a bus containing Nurmagomedov and others in Brooklyn, then followed it with a verbal attack on his opponent’s nationality and religion."
"White ... expressed outrage in Brooklyn in April when McGregor took a hand truck and smashed the window of the bus carrying Nurmagomedov and others.
The rampage, White said at the time, was “the most disgusting thing that has ever happened in the history of the (UFC).” But there were no real consequences for McGregor, other than a brief trip to jail and a court appearance. Certainly no suspension by the UFC, which badly needs its only remaining big star to sell pay-per-views and keep investors happy.
A few months later, White was using video from the incident to promote the fight. And a few days before the fight, he stood smiling as McGregor spouted a bizarre conspiracy theory about the Russian’s manager and the 9/11 terrorist attacks and then vowed to put a hole in Nurmagomedov’s skull.""

^^ All the post-bout events have buried the fact that McGregor was completely outclassed. He wasn't even competitive. Yes, Khabib is in another class, but where does this leave McGregor? Hopefully, this will at least shut up all his pre-bout theatrics.

"performance that has been overshadowed by the unprecedented chaos that followed; but is nevertheless important to reflect on. The world watched on — and then subsequently forgot they watched — as McGregor was beaten by a better fighter.
McGregor, who is, or maybe was, widely regarded as one of the best to ever do it, and who held two belts before anyone else in the organisation, looked completely outgunned."
"it was the fourth loss in McGregor’s 25-fight MMA career, but the second in his last four.
And his second straight loss if we’re including that one time he fought Floyd Mayweather in a ring."

"McGregor was initially cast as a victim because of the disgusting he way he was set upon by three men who climbed inside the cage. But a closer inspection showed him swinging first while he straddled the top of the cage alongside Nurmagomedov’s cousin"
"a man coming up, a trained fighter with bare knuckles, hitting a guy who’s tired, who’s taken some rounds and taking some shots, there has to be ramifications for that. An example has to be made ... It’s criminal. It’s assault.”

UFC 230 update
"Daniel Cormier will defend his heavyweight title against surprise contender Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 in New York in November [3]"
"replaces Valentina Shevchenko's bout with Sijara Eubanks for the flyweight title as the main event."
"It is unclear whether a Cormier-Lesnar fight is still on the cards"
(I bloody hope it's not)
"Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz is off.
Poirier pulled out of the bout with an undisclosed injury, with the UFC confirming that a replacement will not be found for Diaz."

^ Thanks for that article
And he has valid points.
"... UFC). Why didn’t you fire anyone when their team attacked the bus and injured a couple of people? They could have killed someone there, why no one says anything about insulting my homeland, religion, nation, family?"
I read yesterday that Dana White has already said that Normagomedov will not be DQ or lose his belt.

"Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have both received a 10-day suspension from the Nevada Athletic Comission(NSAC) for their actions at UFC 229."
"those sentences could be extended as the organisation conducts it’s investigation into the ugly all-in brawl"
"The commission will vote at a hearing on October 24 to decide whether McGregor and Nurmagomedov will be suspended indefinitely.
The NSAC is also withholding the Russians $2 million pay check"

^ Nunes-Cyborg is my bout of the year. Two women punchers, who punch like men It had been announced on 22 Aug, but I only found out about it yesterday.
(/>Cormier will be stripped of his light heavyweight belt as soon as the bell rings for this bout, so it will be a title bout.
Cormier is saying he will have this bout and just one more, then retire*. Assuming he wins this bout, that will probably be either Lesnar or the winner of this bout.
(/>*ADT-reated, I think professional fighter retirements are a lot like porn star retirements.

"... he pointed the finger at the UFC.
“When I think back there are so many questions I don’t have the answer to. Did they do it all on purpose?’ he said.
“In my personal opinion, I feel like the bus incident was organised with UFC’s help.
“I can’t accuse them, but I would give it 70 per cent that they did it.
“He’s there with his cameras and his PR team with him shooting.
“An important point: the Barclays Center is a very big arena, a 20,000 person arena, but he knew where we were exactly. How could they have known? And how did they enter the arena with a gang of 20, 30 men? Come on.
“Conor has nothing to do with this media event and has a gang with him but these jokers lead him and everyone to the elevator where our bus is."
I'm thinking it was initially set up, but then got out of hand.

"[Nurmagomedov Manager] Abdelaziz said Khabib was toying with McGregor throughout the main fight of UFC 229 and the Russian star had no intentions of a rematch."
"“We know he’s no good. Dana White knows he’s no good. When Dana White made this fight, he knew this fight was going to make money but he knew who was going to get humbled.”"

Anyone see the UFC today? I thought it was great. The headline bout went as expected. I'm really not sure what Derrick Lewis was doing with the kicking, and when he was on the ground, turning his back and trying to get up. I think Cormier was playing with him, and could have ended it all in the first few mins.

The headline bout is Australian Tai Tuivasa and Junior Dos Santos. The second bout is Mark Hunt and Justin Willis.
This will be Mark Hunt's final bout of his current UFC contract. He says he will continue. That may be another MMA promotion, or a return to boxing/kickboxing.

“Nevada State Athletic Commission officials today unanimously approved a joint request presented by Nevada Chief Deputy Attorney General Caroline Bateman and on behalf of Mr. Nurmagomedov’s attorney, James Pisanelli, at today’s monthly meeting in Las Vegas”

To me, it seems like they are just pushing it as far back as they can, so when they finally announce the penalty, the incident will be a vague memory and so the Mickey Mouse penalty won’t seem a big deal.

"UFC 232 has been moved from Las Vegas to just outside Los Angeles after an abnormal finding in a drug test of Jon Jones prompted the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to take action.
The NSAC has refused to license Jones to fight Alexander Gustafsson in the headline bout of this weekend’s card when a recent urine sample collected from the American led to an “atypical finding”. He will have to front an NSAC hearing before he’s allowed to step foot in the Octagon in Vegas again.
The NSAC has jurisdiction over events in Las Vegas but not in Inglewood, California."

^ Someone getting a world title bout after being suspended for 15 months to me is a joke.
IMHO this is the bout of the year.

“Hidden in plain sight amid a whirlwind of attention-grabbing headlines surrounding the card, including Jon Jones' return and his latest drug testing SNAFU which controversially moved UFC 232 from Las Vegas just six days out, Cyborg-Nunes has the potential to be just as exciting as Jones' light heavyweight title rematch against Alexander Gustafsson. More importantly, the fight has just as big of a chance to end up as historically significant.
Arguably the first women's superfight of its kind between current (and dominant) champions, Cyborg-Nunes pairs rugged Brazilian power punchers who have largely run out credible opponents within their own division. It also provides the winner a chance to be recognized as the best fighter in women's MMA”.
