The movie.
Yay or nay?
I'm embarrassed to admit it but I have to give it a big yay. I tried hard to not like it but I've never been able to watch it without having fun by the time it's over.

It's OK. I don't buy the romantic angle, though - some ludicrous casting decisions there.

It's not bad. Was it Tom Cruise who turned Kelly McGillis gay??

^ I wasn't aware that she is. It's amazing how up to date most straight people are on who's gay and who isn't.

I hated it.
And I was in the Navy in 1986 when "Top Gun" was released.

What was the overall reception of it among military people? I always kind of wondered how Hollywood's military flicks are received by those who live it.

I was on an air force base at the time - most people loved it and it got repeat showings at the base cinema.

"Top Gun" was very favorably received by the military. The Navy was a full participant in it's development and production, and provided complete access and support. It was basically a Hollywood produced Navy recruiting film.
The military and Hollywood have a long history of partnership in productions that benefit both. Make Hollwood money, and show the military in a favorable light. If the military likes the script and approves the movie's themes, they usually cooperate with the producers and give them what they need.
As a submarine sailor in San Diego, I saw firsthand the Navy's involvement in the submarine rescue thriller "Gray Lady Down" in 1977, and I was DIRECTLY involved in the production of the Cold War submarine thriller "The Hunt For Red October" in 1988.
Meanwhile, when the producers for "Crimson Tide" called us for info and support in 1995, the Navy forbade us from cooperating with them in any way, because they didn't like the story about a mutiny on a nuclear submarine.
But "Top Gun" was gung ho all the way, and it made Hollwood and the Navy a lot of money.
I just thought it was stupid, with too much emphasis on "sweaty boys", and a dumb romance angle.

It was a chick flick to me and nothing more, the only time I watched was as a courtesy to the woman with me, who wanted to see it.

HFRO was an awesome movie, IMO. I didn't know that about Crimson Tide. I liked the movie anyway though.

To quote a poster on the same subject from another board (not XPT) that I participate in, the volleyball scene is gayer than spunk on a mustache.

It's very corny, but I must say I rather enjoyed it in a sort of way when it was first released. Saw it in a theater with a huge screen and a spectacular sound system.

Nay. Tom Cruise just rubs me the wrong way in a lot of movies, and that's one of them.

Friends -
If I remember correctly, in addition to the dumb volleyball scene in "Top Gun", there was a pointless shower\steamy lockerroom scene where Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer preened and glistened all over each other for no apparent reason.
If this movie were being made today, Matthew McConnaughy would be naked all the way through it.

50/50 or once, I watched it twice with two different women. The successful attempt was with my ex.

I was also in the Navy when it came out! It was good for it's time! Launched plenty of careers: Cruise, Tim Robbins, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer, Clarence Gilyard Jr & Heroes' Nathan Petrelli himself Adrian Pasdar! YAY!

I was active duty Navy when the film came out and I thought it was an awesome flick. A great recruiting tool for the Navy. Sure, parts of it were corny, but overall it was a very entertaining film. I've probably watched it about 50 times since. I also lived about 5 minutes away from Miramar Naval Air Station, where Topgun school is located.

I forgot about that one! I liked it too at the time but I haven't seen it for so long I wouldn't be able to say if I still like it or not.

Tony Scott has since made some movies I've really enjoyed but I thought this flick was complete and utter bullshit.
I was all about Platoon and Full Metal Jacket in the 80s, as well as the multitude of European (mainly Italian) Apocalypse Now, Deer Hunter, First Blood, and Rambo clones that came out during those years.
Essentially, I was down with just about anything that wasn't Top Gun.

Yay. Could do without the romance bullshit AND without meg ryan, but the rest was great. Less of the sappy chick shit and more of the flying/training.
Oh and I'm still trying to get what's so extra gay about the volley ball scene? I can see what is meant to a certain extent, but damn some be acting like the guys were blowing each other between serves.

I thought it was awesome when it first came out. Saw it 4 or 5 times. I think it's kind of corny now, but if I'm channel flipping and it's on, I'll watch it.

Huge Yay. I love that movie. To Cuddly Wombat: Try to remember that this was the 80s. Kelly McGillis was hot then. I know I wanted her, so I totally identified with a younger man being attracted to her. Perhaps you meant something else.
It's a film icon.

Correct. The US Military actually provided funds for its production.
