Of course for this poll, no porn!

For me it's the Japanese B&W Samurai Film "Harikiri" and then maybe "Swallowtail Butterfly" from Japan as well.

The Chinese film "To Live" from the director of "HERO" got me into asian films, but it's not something I could watch often despite it being a favorite.

I also love the vietnamese film "The Scent of Green Papaya".

"Das Boot" is good too. I didn't really love it though until my third viewing of the extended version that was recently released.

Not Ichi the killer? To be honest, i'm too scared to watch that movie somehow. Yet the actor in it I like and is the husband of one of my favorite singers ever. Audition was good, but I haven't liked to many of the director's other films. Too bad I accidently had to rent the CUT Blockbuster version of Audition.

Of Course Ichi - The Killer. But I thought it was obvious so I didn't mention it.
But to be honest, Takashi Miike isn't my favourite
japanese director. I like Shunji Iwai, Kurosawa, Kore - Eda or Kitano better.

Not being a native English speaker myself: probably one of Hitchcock's with Cary Grant.

Of non-English ones: Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre .

Vidocq , another Gérard Depardieu vehicle, deserves a mention too. More for its unusual 'look' and camerawork than for the story, though.

Ran, though any of the Kurasawa Movies I've seen would be worthy nominees.

I don't know which is my favorite. I liked Happy Times and Y Tu Mama Tambien enough to buy them for other people. I just recently got the dvd's for Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring, which I really enjoyed, and haven't seen in years and years.

tmd, don't fear Ichi the Killer. I'm a total weiner, and I thought it was okay.

John Woo's The Killer . It's one of my favorite movies in any language. I also love So Close , Hero , Bad Education , and Talk to Her . I'm sure more Aldomovar movies will be added to my list as I watch them...

Dekalog is pretty high up there. Though, it's hard to shake Fellini. I'd probably say 8-1/2 or La Dolce Vita . Gorgeous black-and-white, Cinecitta, and Nino Rota, can't fight it.

i know, but that doesn't preclude it from being a 'foreign language film' i would think that 3 ppl speaking english makes them an exception, not the majority.

if that movie is disqualified, then i'll take Hero.

Can anyone comment on Sex and Lucia"?
astroknight, "Talk to Her" was great.
What about "Y Tu Mama Tambien"? I know it became mainstream, sort of, but it was good. Gael Garcia Bernal is truly gifted. "Bad Eduacation", "The Motorcycle Diaries", "Dreaming of Julia", "The Crime of the Father", "Amores perros", are all excellent.

My favorite is "Sweet Sixteen." Not to be confused with "Sixteen Candles."

Now, all the dialogue is in English. But it's a movie made in Scotland—with Scottish actors—so you can't understand a goddamn word unless you turn on the subtitles. You'd be lost without subtitles.

Great film about a kid who is 15 and his Mom gets locked up for drugs. He doesn't like his Mom's boyfriend or his grandfather (he lives with both of them in the beginning) because they deal heroin, and are the reason his Mom got locked up. So he moves out and has to live on his own with the help of his friend.

All the kid wants to do is make enough money to buy a caravan (what we call a trailer home) so when his Mom gets out, they'll have a place to live, along with his sister and her baby. He tries to make money selling stolen cartons of cigarettes, but doesn't make enough money doing so. So he rips off Mom's boyfriend of his stash and start selling the heroin using his friend's pizza delivery business. I won't ruin the ending, but it's an entertaining movie and funny to hear those people talk. If you have the patience, watch it twice; once without the subtitles and try to understand what they're talking about. And then again with subtitles. The ending is kinda heartbreaking.

Hate reading films but, "Run Lola Run", was better in German with subtitles than the dubbed English.

I just watched the 2005 Japanese movie "Yamato", the story of the biggest battleship ever built and its sinking in WWII. Excellently filmed battle scenes (very bloody) and lots of sentimental, heart-wrenching, personal stories. Kind of a cross between "Titanic" and "Das Boot". This is now one of my favourite foreign language films.
